You can tell that a card is a"linen" because you can actually see the raised grain of the paper in the image. Linens were produced from the early thirties through the forties. ... moreAt this time. New American printing processes allowed for the printing of postcards on paper with inks that allowed for the use of bright dyes in image coloring. They proved to be extremely popular. Linen postcards document the building of America's new highway infra-structure and the roadside(motels, restaurants, etc) establishments seeking cheap advertising, were quick to see the opportunity. The most known of the early linen publishers, was the Curt Teich Company. The majority of linen postcard production ended around 1939 with the advent of the color"chrome" postcard. Some companies lingered on through the 1940's. The postcard view is now highly sought after by many institutions(including The Smithsonian) and individuals. As it serves as a historical record of the past. Be it the view of a town main street, the local church, school, roadside attraction or the countryside, the post card mirrors the way our parents, grandparents and even we, once lived. Captured in these olden day images are views of people in the dress of the day, often at work, at play, at school or at church. These views show an unaltered presentation of the life and times of the r

They issued an affordable"Folding Pocket Kodak" camera around 1906. This allowed the mass public to take black& white photographs ... moreand have them printed directly onto paper with postcard backs. Various other models of Kodak"postcard" cameras followed igniting a real photo postcard era. These cameras shared two neat features: their negatives were postcard size(the major reason why so many of these images are so clear) and they had a small thin door on the rear of their bodies that. When lifted, enabled the photographer to write an identifing caption or comment on the negative itself with an attached metal scribe. This is the reason that so many of the earlier photo cards are"one of a kind" Early on professional photographers capitalized on the new craze and themselves captured images that they printed on the processing papers that were being made available by a number of companies at the time. They advertised their ability to make as many copies as you liked from your negatives. As the decades passed and new technologies developed. It became even more common for commercial photographers to mass-produce and market these real photo postcards, which reached their zenith in the 1940's. It was against federal law to write any type of message on the address side of a postcard and the back was plain with no dividing bar down the center. These are called"undivided backs" or"UDB" However, Congress ... morepassed a law allowing postcard makers to designate a space for personal messages on the address side, effective March 1, 1907. For this reason many postcards up to 1907 have messages across their fronts. Writing on the front of early postcards is not a fault. Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Description This listing is for a copy of Hymns For The Use Of The Methodist Episcopal Church published by Poe& Hitchcock of Cincinnati in 1861. Printed at the beginning of the American Civil War. Imagine the number of tearful prayers and half-choked hymns this volume has born witness to. I think its probably safe to assume that in its first few years of existence this volume helped comfort someone who suffered or was near to a tragedy. This book is in nice condition for being over 150 years. The cover and binding are intact. The blank page opposite the inside cover has come loose from the binding at the top of the page but all the other pages seem to still be firmly bound. There is some spots of dirt in the book and quite a number of dog-earred pages. But I didn't see any torn pages ... moreor writing or marks in the volume. The cover does have some wear and a bit of bending but is in nicer condition than you would imagine for a volume meant to be carried in a pocket. This would be a fabulous addition to the collection of any Civil War re-enactor or buff. Any religious student or any book collector. PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION! I'M NOT AN EXPERT IN ANY AREA. EVERYTHING SOLD AS IS. I do not pre-pack my items so shipping estimates may be high. I will refund the majority of the difference if my shipping estimates are wrong. I almost always ship items out 1 or 2 days after payment is received. I ship USPS first class. Prior ity. Media mail(when applicable) I do c ombine shipping. INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING- I ship USPS first class and priority. First class has a 4 pound max. Anything higher must go priority. Any item that is bid on and won(or a combination of items) with a value of over $20 USD(including the cost of shipping) will be required to be shipped priority or first class with registered mail added. Registered mail starts at $10.95 on top of shipping. I will have to pack item or items and and give you an estimate including ... moreregistered mail after. If you pay before I add registered mail costs I WILL NOT SHIP UNTIL YOU PAY THE ADDITIONAL COSTS! This is because I am having packages disappearing(I prefer to say stolen) when shipped first class without registered mail because first class has no tracking without registering. Up for bid is a vintage postcard. Item with some wear and creases. A little dirty/discolored. Measures about 5 1/2" x 3 1/2" If you have any questions or would like more pictures. Feel free to ask.
