There are 17 frets and they are in reasonably good shape. The mahogany neck is tight and straight and the fingerboard has mother-of-pearl dot inlay markers. The top is spruce and has a large crack. There are no splinters or missing pieces of wood and the crack should close nicely. There are 2 areas on the bowlback where the staves have separated but there are no cracks and the staves close nicely when pressure is applied. The decorative purfling on the top has missing pieces. The scratch plate is cracked but it is complete and has the stylized"OS" design that identifies it as an Oscar Schmidt. The tailpiece plate where the strings are attached is damaged(see picture) The number"4" is stamped on the volute. There is no reserve for this old mandolin in need of work. Oscar Schmidt Autoharp Antique Vintage Collectible Rare Unique Old Guitar
I have here from the research I have done a 1915 Oscar Shmidt Special Niagara Model zither. Lap guitar, auto harp in relatively good condition for its age. I have not attempted to clean this in any form as I do not wish to damage it and this is why you will find it is a little dusty and has metal flickers from the old string on the front. There is also a hairline crack in the backing of this with previous owner placing clear tape over it to stop it spreading further. There is only one original string missing far left. This would be a great piece for collectors as it is a very rare example of Oscar Shmidt's work. In the centre cut out you can still make out his original trade mark logo and details. Not 100% sure how old it is. Just relaying this information. Encyclopedie Brittanica definition: bombarde. English bombard, German Pumhart, or Pommer, double-reed wind instrument belonging to the oboe or shawm family. It has a wooden body ranging from 10 to 20 inches(25 to 50 cm) usually with six finger holes and one or two keyed holes along its front, a cane reed, and a wide, flaring metal bell. The instrument is held in a position nearly perpendicular to the body, positioning the first three fingers of the left hand over the top three finger holes and the first three fingers of the right hand over the bottom three holes. The little finger of the right hand ... moreplays the key at the bottom of the instrument, or, if no key is present, covers the seventh hole. The reed is placed between the lips and blown into to create the instrument’s characteristically loud and powerful sound. Thorens music box. An early open movement version from approx 1915, made in Switzerland. In working order but could do with some replacement combs to sound better. Reproduction combs are available, there are 30 teeth to this comb and it measures 42mm. The disc is 115mm across and plays Edelweiss. Mounted on timber, the music box is in generally good condition and really just needs a little bit of love and cleaning, it looks superb though, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. The latches all work but there is no key. the bottom is stamped with the Bulls Head(MW) trademark of Maulbetsch& Whittemore. Varnish a warm orange brown, Bow with mother of pearl, Coffin case, 1 latch is missing the eye& small chip on violin please see photos. A Brief History of the Suzuki Masakichi Suzuki was born in 1859 in Nagoya. Japan. At age 14 he had worked in a lacquer-ware shop and later began his studies to become an elementary school music teacher. His future changed when a fellow classmate expressed his desire for a violin. Suzuki immediately put his skills to work and spent a week making his first instrument. A few months later he officially decided that violin making ... morewould be his vocation. By 1888 he had hired several assistants to help in making instruments. Soon orders for violins came in one right after the other. The individual carved figures on this lute are delightful and beautifully detailed. I do not know the age of the instrument but it has been in my family for about 25 years and was brought back from Indonesia as part of a collection of stringed instruments.
