Antique Scenic Beaded Drawstring Purse of Venice, Reminiscent of Bridge of Sighs
Beautiful antique scenic beaded drawstring purse with a view of a Venice canal. Houses, and gondola- reminiscent of the Bridge of Sighs. There are at least 16 different bead colors throughout. The purse is in nice condition with only light wear: a few scattered beads missing in the body- barely noticeable unless you're looking for them- and a couple of the fringe strands need re-beading. All else is in fine shape. The silk lining is in good condition with a few minor tears at the top that can be easily stitched; the drawstring looks like it might have been a pale blue at one time. But has faded- it's otherwise still strong and not unraveling. The purse measures 8" wide and 12 3/4" long. Up for auction are four vacation photos of Italy in 1926. Taken by a woman named Dorcas(possible last name was Whipple? a friend of May Coomba of Milford, Massachusetts. These photos were found in May’s estate papers along with a letter from Dorcas to May while she was in Italy and touring around Europe in the summer of 1926. This auction includes the four photos AND the three-page letter written by Dorcas on her hotel stationery in Italy. Three of the photos are of Venice. Scenes of gondolas on the canals. One shows the Hotel Monaco on the Grand Canal, and Dorcas has dated it on the back: July 22, 1926. The fourth photo is of the famous House of Vettii in Pompei, preserved by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. All measure about 3 x 5” All in very good condition, all intact. Handwriting on the back. An authentic Doors photograph from the collection of iconic rock photographer Henry Diltz. It is from his famous photo shoot in 1969 when he spent two days with the Doors in Venice and at the boardwalk. A book was published with over one hundred of these photos. This exact print is not in the book. But the series of shots are for the scene. The shot is also taken along the Venice Beach boardwalk. However. This one looks to be more in the area of the transition to the Ocean Park and old POP(Pacific Ocean Park) area. Nice shot of the band strolling along the walking/bike trail northward. The photo is printed from the original negative and hand signed by Henry Diltz. I took the whole collection to a book signing by him at the Morrison Gallery in Los Angeles. I had him authenticate each signature and he indicated they were all authentic and by ... morehis own hand. This can be verified by any of the curators at the galleries in L.A.or New York. Item Description What we have here is a rare ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY"The Merchant of Venice" screen printed advertisement circa 1993 by Ralph Steadman! This is an original screen print(probably a one-off run) on thick. Heavy card stock(rather than a flimsier rolled reprint) We're not sure what it was originally used for, perhaps a subway or lobby advertisement? We haven't been able to find another like it, or much information about it(in our research, Ralph Steadman's people referred us to the RSC, who did not respond to our inquiries) The RSC does not sell reprints on heavy card stock like this, so it does not seem to have originated from their store. It measures roughly 30"x20" double crown size) At the very bottom, it reads"Screenprinted by G& B Arts plc. RSC 1993" G& B Arts is a well-renowned ... morescreen company in the UK founded by John Gorman and Lionel Bart) It is screwed into what may be the original frame, and held in place by pressure clips. There is no glass or plastic in the frame. We photographed this both with and without a flash(the flash photo shows the richness of the color a little better, but produces an unfortunate glare) This piece is in fantastic shape overall but does have some minor flaws. One or two of the back pressure clips are missing(which doesn't really have any ill effect on the display) The frame itself has a couple of minor dings and scratches, and the print itself has some minor edgewear(see photos) There is a tiny bit of sticker residue in the upper-right corner(a remnant of small price sticker placed by the previous owner which can easily be cleaned off, see photos) We are not professional graders, so please use the photos as your guide and ask any questions that you need to prior to bidding!
