ANTIQUE ISLAMIC TRAVELLING QALAMDAN DIVIT BRONZE PEN BOX& INKWELL brass This is a fine ANTIQUE ISLAMIC SCRIBE'S TRAVELLING QUALAMDAN or DIVIT a type of BRONZE PEN BOX& INKWELL. In my estimation it dates from around the late 19th Century. But please make up your own mind about this. The Qualamdan or Divit measures approx 9 inches(230mm) long. By 2 1/4 inches(55mm) wide, b 1 3/4 inches(45mm) tall. It is made from brass. And is decorated with typical Islamic foliate designs. In use it would have been worn in the scribes belt. Or girdle, and would have held quill pens and ink. It is in good original condition with light wear. Consistent with its great age, but no damage or repairs. This is a fine example of its type and it would make a great decorative piece and be a lovely addition to any collection. FOR SALE: A very rare and beautiful Islamic/ Persian papier mache pen/ quill/ scroll box. It dates from around the late 17th/ early 18th century I believe. It is in very good condition for its age. With no loss of paintwork. The images are quite striking and very well painted. The surface lacquer has crinkled in some places but has not lifted from the surface. The paintings on the top depict a man on horse, a woman undressing while a maid holds a screen behind her and a man with a beard contemplating a tree whilst kneeling. One side shows two horseman, the one in front possibly being a nobleman because he is wearing a crown on his head and the one behind maybe depicting his servant. The other side shows two figures, one bearded who appear to be conversing with each other beneath trees. There is also a small picture of the head and shoulders ... moreof a lady and on one end there is a robed person with arms crossed. All these paintings may have some religious or other significance. The interior is nicely decorated with what appear to be flowers. There is some damage to the underside where the tongue at one end of the cover is missing as you can see in the photos. Looking for rare ink wells? You are bidding on a rare Persian qualamdan. A qalamdan is a pen box. It would have been used by calligraphers to store their pens and inkwells. It is made from papier mache and dates around the 1800's. There is the brass inkwell. Which is stamped, I believe, by the maker. The dipper is also brass. They just need to be polished. They could have been made in the Qajar era. I can't say for certain. My wife and I purchased them when we were teaching in Iran in the 1970's in an antique shop in Teheran. It is 8 1/2 inches long. For auction is this beautiful large antique Persian papier mache Qalamdan. It dates from mid 1800's during the Qajar era. The qalamdan is one of the finest I have seen. It has been hand painted with beautiful scenes. the level of detail is incredible. The facial expressions on the people and the very fine details to their clothing has been completed by a master. The sides of the qalamdan have been hand painted with Qajar men and women in a similar style. Each scene represents a different Persian or Islamic Story. The qalamdan comes complete with a solid silver inkwell. The top part is silver. But the base is brass) It also comes with a pair of rare signed scissors and also a Qalam.
