The Customs and Excise and the London brewers/distillers began to use Clarke's hydrometer. In 1802 the Board of Excise held a competition to find a better instrument than Clarke's hydrometer for revenue purposes and nineteen instruments were submitted for consideration. The winning design was that of Bartholomew Sikes. A ... moreperipatetic London employee of the excise commissioners. Sikes's hydrometer was enshrined in legislation in 1816 with the Sikes Hydrometer Act and remained the legal standard until 1907
I have owned about ten Sykes and this is the nicest by far. Marked Buss. 33 Hatton Garden, London. The case is in fine condition with working clasps. The silk is good, the mercury thermometer is intact and works well.I believe it is on a slice of ivory. The slide rule is in good condition and all weights are there. The float is straight and clean, noting a small ding in the side. Altogether a very nice find; makes a great gift for the amateur brewer. Please email requests for information or additional pictures.

THIS ITEM IS SOLD WITHOUT RESERVE Description This is an unusually fine quality pocket Sikes hydrometer made by Joseph Long of Little Tower St London. What lifts it above the norm is that it is housed in a lovely burr walnut box instead of the usual plain mahogany examples. It is not only named to the nameplate on the front but also on the thermometer and on the float. Joseph Long was at Little Tower Street from 1821 to 1884 and I believe that the quality of this example puts it towards the early years at this address. As with the'Gerletti' spirit beads I have listed this week this hydrometer is worthy of any collection/museum in the scientific instrument/ breweriana field. It is being sold WITHOUT RESERVE and with a 99p start price. Please do look at my other items as I will combine postage charges etc(see delivery below) Bid now ... moreto avoid disappointment. Measurements Approximately 5"127mm) wide and 2" 51mm) deep and 1 1/2" 38mm) high. Condition Please note that this is an antique item which is 185 years old. The box is in excellent condition with just the loss of the silk covering the lid wadding and some dents to the float. Please refer to the photographs and do not hesitate to email if you have any questions prior to bidding. Delivery The delivery prices quoted are for'signed for' services. I will also combine deliveries should you purchase more than one item to keep your costs down. I do not make any money on postage and packing and regularly subsidize the cost to provide a better level of service. Good luck with your bidding. PLEASE NOTE My next auction for interesting small antique items e.g. silver. Antique Sykes's Hydrometer by Robson- Optician- Newcastle Upon Tyne Beautiful mahogany box with original hardware.lines with velvet and satin with thick padding.nameplate consists of inlaid bone Most hydrometers are spelled"Sikes's" but this one has an unusual spelling of" Sykes's" Box measures 8"L x 3.75"W x 1.75"H Brass hardware(hinges& clasps) 13011 10 solid brass weights& brass float manufactured by Loftus of London Mercury thermometer is slightly broken off at the top but still has its contents Thermometer constructed of glass. Brass and bone by P. Stevenson of Edinburgh Top of page BARTHOLOMEW SIKES devised a system of alcoholometry which was legalised in Great Britain in 1816 for ascertaining the strength of spirits for revenue purposes and has remained in official use ever since. ... moreHe designed a metal hydrometer and compiled tables for use in conjunction with it. Which, together, provide a simple means of determining the strength of mixtures of alcohol and water. All that has to be done is to float the hydrometer in the sample of which the strength is required, observe the hydrometer reading, take the temperature of the sample and then consult the tables, where, under the temperature and against the hydrometer reading, is found the strength of the spirit. Such a simple and rapid method was not devised in a moment. Indeed, the Excise Department was established in 1643, nearly two hundred years before the adoption of Sikes’s system, and from its inception one of its duties was the collection of taxes levied on spirits. The standard edition is the most common type. The kit includes 1 thermometer. 1 float, 10 weights and 1 case. The box is lined with satin/velvet and thick padding to protect the float and thermometer Please look at all photos& ask all questions BEFORE bidding/buying Not 100% satisfied? LONDON which including the box and instruments is in SUPERB CLEAN CONDITION and dates back to the 1870's. Note the naive spelling mistake in the name SYKES which has been miss-spelt as SYKESS. In 1802 the Board of Excise held a competition to find a better instrument than the Clarkes hydrometer for revenue purposes and nineteen instruments were submitted for consideration. The winning design was that of Bartholomew Sikes. An employee of the Excise Commissioners. The Sykes Hydrometer was used to determine the strength of spirits for the distiller. Victualler and tax collector ... morealike. It was required that brewers notify the tax exciseman of the times when the first wort would be ready for measure. The exciseman would measure the gravity of the wort and impose the duty due. John Tuck an early 19th century brewer said'and if the exciseman be a good fellow, be sure to tell him the first wort will be out and get him a handsome lunch and a cup of ale' Books of the 18th and 19th century often feature advertisements in the back. Which helped to finance the publication. One such book was'The Private Brewers Guide to the art of Brewing Ale and Porter' by John Tuck, 1822. HERE IS AANTIQUE CASED SYKES LONDON HYDROMETER ALCOHOL SPIRITS BRASS SCALES.WEIGHTS IN GOOD CONDITION. THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A THERMOMETRE WITH THIS. The purpose of a hydrometer is to determine the specific gravity of a liquid. From this it is often possible to determine the composition or strength of the liquid. The Sikes hydrometer was, for very many years, the standard means of determining the alcohol content of spirits and hence the duty payable. I have added gauging rules as they were also associated with determining the duty payable on wines and spirts In the 1740's. The Customs and Excise and the London brewers/distillers began to use Clarke's hydrometer. In 1802 the Board of Excise held a competition to find a better instrument than Clarke's hydrometer for revenue purposes and nineteen instruments were submitted for consideration. ... moreThe winning design was that of Bartholomew Sikes. A peripatetic London employee of the excise commissioners. Sikes's hydrometer was enshrined in legislation in 1816 with the Sikes Hydrometer Act and remained the legal standard until 1907( although they remained in common use until 1980) The Sikes Hydrometer Act: The Sikes hydrometer was used to determine the strength of spirits for the distiller. Victualler and tax collector alike, and worts both before and after fermentation for the brewer, providing an accurate method of determining Alcohol proof, strength, percentages and duties thereof. It was also required that brewers notify the tax exciseman of times when the first wort would be ready for measure. The exciseman would then measure the gravity of the wort and impose the tax due.
