An important scientific relic relating to the study of Australian natural history in the nineteenth century. The label uses the Latin name originally given to the animal by the German naturalist Johann Blumenbach in the early 1800s. Although its scientific name later became Ornithorhyncus anatinus. The enigma that is the platypus- a monotreme. Or egg-laying mammal- confused many eminent scientists, including Richard Owen, and its true nature was not fully understood until 1884, when William Caldwell accurately described its mode of reproduction.
