This is one of the more rare Bausch& Lomb American Type microscope models. It was only manufactured over just a brief 3-year period from 1889 to 1891. The featured instrument is very similar in design to the B&L“The Model” microscope. But it lacks the rack and pinion focus mechanism and is built upon a horseshoe shaped foot with rectangular pillars instead of the“Y”shaped foot with round pillars that characterized“The Model. This instrument bears the name of the manufacturer in fancy script on the top rear face of the circular stage. Bausch& Lomb Optical Co. These were my Dad's and I really don't ... moreneed them or use them. He used them to look at really small rock samples I believe for prospecting. What the two accessories for it do. I don't know or if they work properly or not. They appear to be in good shape and offhand, look like some kind of adapters so two people can look at the same thing at the same time, but I haven't tried them. They look to be in pretty good shape as the pictures show. I'm sure somebody out there knows what they are. They are in seperate boxes marked Spencer, Buffalo NY. The one that has 90 degree angled eyepeices has a 6x and a 10x eyepeice and the eyepiece on the long tube can rotate around. It's in the black box and that's nice. The brown box is a bit rougher and it has one that is at an angle and has two 6x eyepeices. The microscope has Ernst Leitz Wetzlar on it and is marked No. 291286. I don't know if that's a model number or a serial number. It has a 10x eyepiece and two magnifying lenses. Once is a number 3 and the other is a 6L. I don't know what the numbers mean. You can look through it and see light via the mirror so I believe it will work. The mirror can be moved around and there is an iris mechanism above the mirror that works via an arm. Both the knob sets turn smoothly. It's been used as it has some scratches and paint loss here and there and some light corrosion on various parts as you can see in the photos. But overall I don' think it's in too bad a shape. I know he rarely took it out and kept it put away almost all the time. I don't know how old it is. That's about all I can say about it. This instrument was made by R& J. Beck, Ltd. of London, UK. The name of the manufacturer is engraved on the top of the slide, BECK, LONDON. It dates from circa 1900. Accompanying this listing is a cut from the R&J Beck. Ltd. Scientific Instruments Catalogue from ... morethe year 1900 that shows this same instrument. It is their model No. 3422. Which is described as follows: Stage Forceps. A 3x1 plate carries a metal fitting holding a short revolving rod with a pair of spring forceps at one end and a tube with cork at the other. The slide base appears to be made of polished Bakelite and measures 75mm long by 25 mm wide. There is a central 12 mm diameter aperture in the base to permit the use of transmitted light from below the stage. If desired. The forceps unit itself appears to be made of Nickel-plated brass and measures 60mm long. It is supported on a short pillar at one end of the slide. The entire unit can be rotated 360 degrees on this pillar. The forceps end is designed to hold opaque objects, such as in insect for observation under incidental light on top of the stage of a microscope. The opposite end of the unit contains an encapsulated cork that can be used to hold a pin on which an insect or other opaque object is impaled. The tube that holds the cork also has several small ports around its periphery that allow a pin to be placed at several angles to permit optimal observation of a specimen. Nothing inside. If you put a specimen inside it, it does have a bit of magnification when held to the light. although I am not sure if this is its intended purpose? Your guess is as good as mine. or perhaps better on this one. Could also be a part/ accessory, although I am not sure how it would attach to anything else. Given the markings. It is likely by William and Samuel Jones, who are also famous for pioneering the Jones Brothers Most Improved Microscope in the late eighteenth century. I do not think this has any relation to that particular microscope design though. There are some dents. Smudges and scratches, as shown in the photos. Appears ... moreto have been polished. Excellent Antique Microscope Accessory, Complete Set of Light Filters
This well made set of light filters and numbered aperture pieces. I'm not sure of the correct terminology, comprises numbered elements from 1- 7 and three glass filters marked"P A" either side of an arrow. These three are marked"Red Selenite, Blue Selenite and Mica" which means nothing to me I'm afraid, and they all have a diameter of 22 mm, and the canister they are housed in measures 28 mm long including the screw-on lid. The condition of all the filters, etc is very good, as is the canister except for light staining of the top of the lid as shown. One of the numbered set, number 2, is a replacement piece from the original set being slightly darker in appearance and not having a number marked on it.
