RARE Antique 1870-1880 Tolles Boston, Mass Brass Microscope #232 w/ Wood Box
RARE Antique 1870-1880 Tolles Boston. Mass. Brass Microscope Marked#232 ~ Tolles Boston Goes from 14" tall to 17" tall Comes in original wood box 9 1/2" x 7" x 15" tall( box does have some cracks on bottom and wood has small split on front) Looks like it had a lock on front but no key. Hinges are not screwed to box. Needs screws. Has 2 extra lenses(one marked 1/4" and glass slides Inside mirror is broken but glass around it is not* I revised a couple pictures because I cleaned the front where it is marked Tolles Boston. I cleaned with soap and water. Left the rest for the professionals to clean. Total weight is 15lbs. Just microscope weighs about 7 1/2 lbs. I am not an expert on microscopes. But everything seems to move and work great! This is a very rare microscope! You will not find one for sale anywhere! Great ... morefor the high end collectors! Biography: Robert Bruce Tolles was born 1823 in Connecticut and had little formal education. In 1844. He was apprenticed to Charles A. Spencer in Canastota, NY, and about 1858 established his own business in Canastota. By 1859, he was fabricating microscopes with Charles E. Grunow. Tolles made major innovations in the optics of microscopes and held several patents. In 1867. Tolles moved to Boston and became a partner in Boston Optical Works, at 66 Milk Street. And later 131 Devonshire Street, Boston. The partnership broke up in 1872, and Tolles continued the business on his own. Charles Stodder, who had been the distributor of Tolles microscopes and telescopes since 1860, and formerly a partner in the Boston Optical Works, continued to sell Tolles products after the dissolution of the partnership. After Tolles died in 1883. The business was carried on by Charles X. Dalton, who had worked for Tolles making metal microscope and telescope stands since his Canastota days and who had moved with him to Boston. This is a one deal and will not be relisted! Good Luck!

PALAIS ROYAL 158, PARIS – CIRCA 1848 You are invited to purchase a relatively rare antique lacquered brass compound monocular microscope that was manufactured by the French optician. Charles Chevalier, in Paris in the middle part of the 19th Century. Featured here is a classic Charles Chevalier Antique Brass Drum Microscope. This instrument comes in its original Mahogany wood case along with a brass live ... morebox. This instrument is signed in fancy script on the top of the body tube. “ Charles Chevalier. Palais-Royal 158, Paris ”(see accompanying composite image of this inscription) This instrument does not bear a typical serial number. So accurately dating this microscope to a precise year of manufacture is not possible. However, given the fact that Charles Chevalier lived from 1804 to 1859 and he moved his optical workshop from Palais-Royal 163 to Palais-Royal 158 in Paris rather late in his career, in 1847 or 1848, we can conservatively and quite reliably date the instrument to circa 1848. Note: For more details on Charles Chevalier. Optician, Paris please see below. DETAILED DESCRIPTION: This instrument is built upon a 55mm diameter heavy circular base of solid lacquered brass. Rising from the base is a 34mm diameter japanned black brass cylinder with an open ovoid shaped “window” in the front. This cylinder supports the stage and the rest of the instrument. Enclosed within the drum base is a single-sided 20mm diameter concave mirror that provides illumination from the open window in the front of the instrument to an open aperture in the stage above. Antique Ernst Leitz Wetzlar Brass Microscope No 216525 3 61 Lens Bausch Lomb 1.9
This auction is for. Vintage Ernst Leitz Wetzlar Brass Microscope No 216525 This is from my father-in-laws estate. This is a very cool looking old microscope.from the early 1900's I believe. This is a very solid microscope weighing in at a hefty 10 pounds. This was always kept as a display piece on my father-in-laws mantel. I'm not sure of the functionality as a working microscope.I imagine all the lenses would need to be cleaned up/polished if you were going to actually use it. I do know all the knobs and such rotate nice and smooth. There is some mild surface corrosion here and there on the brass.also the paint is somewhat peeled off the base/feet. It has two Leitz lenses.a 61 and a 3.and a Bausch and Lomb 1.9mm patent date 1925. I took LOTS of pictures to try and give you an idea of the condition. Any questions please feel free ... moreto ask. Good luck! Shipping $20 to the lower 48 states. All auctions ending over $50 require a confirmed Paypal address Powered by The free listing tool. R. Krugelstein, in Berlin, Germany during the last decade of the 19th Century. The instrument comes in a nice Mahogany wood case along with a set of 3 oculars and 4 objective lenses. This instrument is unsigned. But clearly bears a singular distinguishing characteristic of microscopes manufactured in Berlin by Krugelstein. According to Timo Mappes of Karlsruhe, Germany, an avid collector of German made antique brass microscopes and a recognized expert in the field, microscopes that have the unusual fine adjustment with a thumbwheel under the column within the confines of a C-shaped limb or pillar located ABOVE and not below the stage is known only on microscopes manufactured by the Berlin manufacturer R. Krugelstein. No other European or American microscope manufacturer appears to have used this particular nuance of design and construction. And, where the C-shaped pillar does appear in German-made instruments, it is invariably found below the stage and not above– all such instruments appear to have a common origin from opticians at the Kellner Optical Institute in Wetzlar, Germany. This instrument bears a serial number“1715”

This instrument comes in its original Alder wood case along with a set of eight(8) prepared slides, one of which happens to be a very rare and valuable J.B. In English, the “Patent School and Salon Microscope.” This unique microscope was first invented and ultimately patented by Conrad von Rappard(1805 – 1881) who operated a microscope slide-making and microscope manufacturing business in Wabern, Switzerland. Due to the fact that von Rappard was a political refugee in Switzerland, he could not do business there under his own name. So, he established his business first in the name of his partner as August Menzel and Company from 1850 to 1851. Thereafter, from 1851 to circa 1865, he named his firm after his wife-to-be as Engell and Company. Due to the fact that this instrument was first introduced around

1800's - Attractive Antique Brass Microscope Gould Type - Unsigned / Incomplete
Attractive antique brass field microscope with wood box. I believe it is in the style of Gould. Unmarked. I estimate this to be from the mid to late 1800’s. Please review the photos for a better sense of the condition; happy to send additional pictures. It is incomplete. But still includes a lot of the major pieces to make it for a very nice presentation piece; not sure what would have been originally included, but it is certainly missing the reflecting mirror and there appears to have been some kind of additional attachment to the stage. There is some loss of lacquer on the brass. But still shows nicely. Gears slides up and down fairly well with some slight looseness(teeth are intact) Box is in good condition with a good antique glow. But some of the inside dividers have come off and there appears to be some minor gluing at some point. Please ... moredo not hesitate to ask questions. I would be happy to ship internationally to most locations. But please confirm that I can ship to you specific location if outside Canada, US or the UK. This instrument is unsigned(no maker's name) and most likely dates from circa 1870. Entomologists are engaged in the study of insects and this small portable microscope would be used by them in the field to study live insects in some detail. This unit consists of a removable modified watchmaker’s glass or magnifying glass that is mounted on top of a glass cylinder. ... moreThe watchmaker’s glass is removed and an insect or other opaque object is dropped into the instrument and the glass cap is reattached to trap the specimen inside. The glass cylinder allows ambient light to illuminate an insect or other specimen under observation. The lower end of the glass cylinder is fixed to a brass cylinder that forms the base for the instrument. At the juncture of the lower end of the glass cylinder and the top of the brass base is a floor or stage that has a checkered pattern overlay. This microscope measures 32mm in diameter at the base and stands about 85mm tall. Its small size and very light weight makes it easy to carry in one’s pocket ready to be used at a moment’s notice when an interesting specimen crosses one’s path. During the latter part of the 19th Century. A very similar instrument was offered for sale in the USA by James W. Queen& Co. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Accompanying this listing is a catalogue cut from their 1870 Catalogue that shows an image of a similar instrument that they offered in two sizes, small and large(catalogue numbers 1636 and 1637) The similarities to the listed microscope are readily apparent. Antique brass Bertrand "furnace" microscope, mid 19th century
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE HE Offered for auction is a nice and very well preserved"furnace" microscope by Bertrand. Dating to ca. 1840-70. The catalogue of the Billings Microscope Collection of the Medical Museum(Washington DC. 1974) attributes this type of tiny"mineral or furnace type" to Français Bertrand and to the production date of 1840. This tiny version of the Martin"drum" microscope was designed in France by Bertrand in 1839. The little microscope mounts into the grooves cut into the lid of the mahogany box. This pocket-sized instrument mounts like a chimney on top of the mahogany case and that is perhaps the reason that this model is also known as a furnace type microscope. Despite the date supplied by the Billings catalogue. These pocket microscopes seem to have some variations, and ... moreit seems that they were marketed over longer sequence of time, I believe well into the second half of the 19th century. Indeed, Brian Bracegirdle suggests in the Science Museum catalogue(2005. On CD) the years 1880-90 as the date of some of these instruments. I think that it would be more logical to assume that this design. Having several variations in size and style, was manufactured between ca. 1840 and 1880. Here we see a somewhat larger version of Bertrand's"furnace microscope" This microscope is signed inside the case lid"Manufacture d'armes et de cycles de Saint-Etienne" Founded in 1888. This is most likely the retailer and not the maker hence the instrument may be decades earlier. Yet it does indicate again that these microscopes were traded also later than the 1st half of the 19th century. SHIPPING The microscope in its case will be wrapped very carefully and shipped promptly(usually the same day) after receiving cleared payment. Signed for and with tracking number. Please note, s hipping will be made by express mailing service(EMS) Hence it is expected to arrive within five working days. HOWEVER. Sometimes items are held by the customs for

Antique Brass Binocular Microscope Salmon of London 19th Century
Here is what I believe to be a 19th Century microscope. The inscription on the body reads Salmon. 50 Seymour St, Euston Square, London. It is constructed of lacquered brass. The condition is generally good. But one of the binocular eyepieces is missing. There are a small number of flattened teeth on the height adjustable section. Creating a slightly stiff spot when adjusting the height. I'm not able to test the function of the microscope obviously because of the missing piece. There is an extra lens of some sort pictured in the photos that I know nothing about. The Mahogany case has seen better days as the interior fittings are damaged and I'm not sure whether it is the original case or not. It is a handsome microscope. However, and it displays very well. I've only estimated the shipping price so please ask me for a shipping price ... moreif you're bidding from overseas. I'm starting the price very low and selling without reserve.
