Illustrated in soft pastel colors by R. Phillips Sanderson. Very pleasing to the eye and the mountain ranges look almost three dimensional. The full map(everything is attached) is the first picture in the gallery. The four above are blowups of each quadrant of the map. I was trying to give you a feel for what it looks like a little bigger. Didn't quite work the way I hoped it would. But I think you should be able to get a feel for it. The map measures about 16" wide by 20" high. There's plenty of space to be creative with and there are no creases(other than the fold) No bumps or age issues. This has been ... morewell preserved. Measures 31 long by 43 3/4 wide. For the age i would say the map is in fair condition. The top roll up down board has come off. There are some paint spots and torn areas mostly along the top edge, a few small torn places in the map and some staining as pictured. I think ... morethe top could be trimmed back a little and and put the top board back on and it really wouldn't be bad at all. The one area that is pointed out with a red arrow would still show but you could glue the map back to the canvas and and i dont think it would be noticed that much.Back of map has canvas attache to it and there is also white spots of paint on it. Exhibiting the Chief Cities and Towns, Principal Travelling[sic] Routes&c. Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, 1847. 28.5" x 20.5" hand-colored. Lacking the original pocket-case. This is one of the great Mexican War maps, showing all of Mexico, including California and the Southwest. The borders of the state(and former republic) of Texas are edged in red, using the Emory version. Five flags indicate the battles of the Alamo, San Jacinto, Resaca de la Palma, Palo Alto, in Texas and the Battle of Monterey in Mexico. Weakened folds are separating with some minor paper loss in places at the intersections. Some repair work has been done with clear tape on the verso resulting in some adhesive ghosting ... moreon the recto. Pencil markings in the upper left corner of the map does not detract. Scattered spots of foxing. Colors remain strong and vibrant. This second edition is an adapted version of Mitchell's 1846 New Map of Texas, Oregon and California with the Regions Adjoining. Mitchell began to publish this series at the outbreak of the Mexican-American War. Mitchell anticipated a demand for maps in order to better understand events in this foreign war, so he quickly came out with a folding map of Mexico, with Texas shown with a red outline in its relative position. Keeping its purpose in mind, the map had minimal topographical information; but roads, towns, political divisions, and rivers are clearly shown. This updated edition included a detail of the Battle of Monterey in the upper right corner. Reference: This edition of the map is not located in Streeter or Wheat.
