A well know map publisher at the turn of the century. A well know map publisher at the turn of the century. The atlas was created for stock speculation and brokers to show clients the routes of the early railroads. Land speculators, stock brokers, bankers and some financial big wigs were the market place A.A. Grant wanted to please with this atlas. We have heard about one earlier. An 1889 edition. A work consisting of six volumes with a total of 378 map sheets drawn as globe gores on the so-called Flamsteed or modified conical projection at a unprecedented 1:1,641,836 scale- the whole of which assembles to form a globe of 7.775 meters in diameter. The map traces the Atlantic Coast from well north of Tampico to well southeast of Veracruz and extends inland to include Mexico City. Originally published in installments. The completed atlas offered no less than the largest ... morepicture of the earth's surface that had ever been recorded. Despite a sale price of 600 gold francs(~ $4000 in 2009 USD) the atlas was a commercial success. Selling hundreds of copies to subscribers ranging from the crowned heads of Europe to Alexander von Humboldt to the Pope. This is a large 1888 Railroad Map of Mexico. It measures 14 X 21 inches. Map was taken from the Rand McNally New Business Atlas which is very rare and highly sought after. This map is genuine. Not a copy or reprint. It may have a few minor handling flaws as to be expected in a map this age and large. This map has some folding on the bottom corners. Please see upper scan. The Rand McNally Business Atlas first printed in 1876. Was still in transition in 1888. Rand McNally was experimenting with different methods so that shipping clerks would find the railroads on the maps with speed and exactness. This map has some water stains and a few staple marks. And is sealed in clear plastic to preserve it, and is no longer delicate and subject to deterioration. Johnson's map showing the 1861 map of Mexico. From the Johnson and Browning Atlas of 1861. Advertised by the maker as a Steel Plate engraving. Alvin Jewitt Johnson was a prolific mapmaker of the 19th Century who recognized a need for quality American maps during it's period of rapid growth. Around 1859. Johnson purchased the engraved steel plates created by G.W. Colton and the copyrights for his maps. This map is from the Johnson and Browning Atlas of 1861, In his attempt to create an attractive. High-quality product to compete with the mapmakers of Europe, Johnson added ornate borders to the plates. He also continued to employ a staff of professional colorists to add the vivid hand applied washes to the lithographed maps. 1757 Bellin Map- Environs de la Ville de Mexico L'Abbe Prevost's'Histoire Generale des Voyages' is a 25 volume plus work describing the discoveries. Journeys and settlements of seventeenth and early eighteenth century European powers. The work contains maps by Jacques Nicolas Bellin as well a number of views and engravings. Bellin is a common name in collected cartography and his enormous output was aided by his privileged position as the French royal Hydrographer. This enabled him to have first access to all the new maps coming in to the French Naval Ministry at a time when the French navy was exploring widely in N. America, Africa and the far East. This map of Mexico City is from a 1757 edition of that work. It has fine detail to Lake Texcoco and the surrouding lakes and rivers. It shows a number of towns and villages, there ... moreis nice detail to the mountains, and the map has a title cartouche, a scale of distance. The map measures 8" by 6" with several folds. Showing Texas as a large Republic, Mormon City is named within the vast Sandy Desert. Note the triangular shape of New Mexico. Intersting transitional map. This particular type of hand engraving upon metal plate printing process is now essentially extinct as method of reproducing popular maps. Rendering this printed leaf an interesting original artifact from a past era. Printed on quality period paper which may show typical gentle signs of age. Perhaps some minor light spotting or foxing, but retains its inherent structural flexibility ... moreand soundness. In near Very Good or better antiquarian condition.
