Belize, El Salvador and the Yucatan peninsula from the Modern Atlas of(1758-1825) The prolific Edinburgh-based poet, historian, essayist and geographer. After publishing numerous works of verse, histories and numismatic treatises in the late 18th century, Pinkerton turned his attention to geography with the publication of the first volume of his highly influential Modern Geography in 1802. Numerous expanded editions of this"description of the empires. Kingdoms, states and colonies with oceans, seas and isles in all parts of the world" followed with success, ... moreallowing Pinkerton to undertake the production of the enormous elephant folio maps that made up the Modern Atlas. Described by as"one of the best English atlases of the period" we imagine that Pinkerton. A proud son of Scotland, would retort that he hopes Mr. Rumsey means English language atlases) Pinkerton's elegantly designed and finely engraved maps are dense with information and represent a pinnacle of early 19th century cartography. The map was drawn by Lewis Hebert(under the supervision of Mr. Pinkerton" as the map informs us at lower left) who was later dispatched by the British Colonial Office to South Africa in 1830 to produce an enormous manuscript map of the region that. Although never published, is rightly considered the most authoritative map of South Africa produced in the 1830s. Here, however, the cartography is obviously derived from earlier maps by Alexander von Humboldt including the hachure depiction of terrain. The engraving work is by the master Samuel John Neele(1758-1824) who worked extensively with the great British cartographer John Cary. Who as a skilled engraver himself insisted on the highest standards of work as did Pinkerton.

This is a beautiful map of Mexico. It was taken from a salvaged antique atlas. It measures 10 1/2 X 13 1/2 inches. Map has two nicks in upper margin caused by string that bound map in atlas. Paper shows normal aging and is still supple. Not stiff where it would crack at slightest bump. Copyright is 1897. This map would look fantastic framed under glass. I have for sale a beautiful Colbalt Blue 9 1/2" Plate. Plate is beautifully done with Bird in center. A Beautiful piece of pottery. The back is marked Puebla Mexico. These are very rare plates. I showed them to someone who knows Mexican Pottery and he has never saw these plates. I obtained them from an Estate. I will be listing several more. Mexican American War- Sonora Mexico/Gulf of California/ Baja California Campaign under Commodore Shubrick 1847-1848 Exact origin unknown. But believed to be a part of the printed report to Congress in 1848-9 by Commodore Shubrick. Folded map. Size 9 3/4" x 17" Folds to 5 1/4" x 9 3/4" Condition: Overall very good. Paper is sound with light agetoning. There are a few small dampstains& some yellowing on folds. Original binding holes in left margin. A fascinating map showing details of a relatively forgotten campaign in the war. In October 1847 Captain Elie A. F. La Vallette of the first-class frigate USS Congress in company with the sloop USS Portsmouth forced the Mexican garrison under Col. Antonio Campuzano at the fort and city of Guaymas to evacuate the city under the threat of bombardment. Following the bombardment. ... moreLa Vallette landed to take possession, to find the city abandoned by its defenders and most its population. With insufficient force to occupy the city, La Vallette demolished the seaward defenses of the port and left the sloop USS Portsmouth offshore to dominate the port with its guns then dismantled the seaward defenses of the city and thereafter controlled the city by the threat of bombardment by a sloop of war kept on station at the mouth of the harbor. In November 1847 an attempt to reoccupy Guaymas, Sonora, by Col. Campuzano was repulsed by a landing party of sailors and marines under Lieutenant W. T. Smith, supported by the guns of the USS Dale. In January 1848- Fabius Stanley from the USS Dale led a surprise attack on the camp at the village of Cochori held by Mexican forces blockading Guaymas. This map appears to document this attack. Showing the track of the boats from the USS Dale, their landing point near Cochori, and the line of march to attack the Mexican Army camp. Also shown are details of the outpost and quartel. Also on the cartouche are two armadillos, animals that often appear in allegorical representations as typical American animals. Date of the first edition: 1634 IThis map is either 1634 or1635. Copper engraving(15.50 x 20.0 inches) Verso: Mounted onto board. Latin Condition: Old Coloured. Koeman B15 map 179. There is a printed tear-sheet on the back of the frame that reads as follows: For this map of the western coastal regions of Mexico. Blaeu again took an earlier published map as his model. By way of the Hondius map of 1606. Blaeu's map goes back to the map published by the Antwerp mapmaker Abraham Ortelius in 1579, its self probably based on a slightly ... moreearlier manuscript map. Despite the implication in the title, the map does not cover all of the province of New Spain, only a portion of modern Mexico. At the time the region was described as being rich in gold and silver. With pearl fishing carried on in the coastal areas. The numerous salt lakes produced the finest salt by means of evaporation, and much was also made of the sugarcane cultivated here. In the east of the mapped area. Below the large title: cartouche may be seen the city of Mexico, situated on the shores of a large lake, described as an ample City, queen of all cities in the New World. Although the map maker gave no clues, the small lozenge-shaped symbols to the left of the cartouche probably indicate gold or silver mines. This is a very colorful antique map of the Mexican National Railroad Short Line Laredo Route which included Monterey. Saltillo, San Luis Potosi, San Miguel De Allende, Celaya, Morelia, Patzcuaro, Toluca and City of Mexico. This map was produced by the New York Bank Note Company which also designed stock certificates back in the day. I cannot find a date of this map, but of found similar designed ones online in the 1880-1890s. There are some small tears where the folds in the map are. Still a really neat piece with great colors. Shipping: This will be sandwiched between two pieces of cardboard and shipped in a bubble pack envelope to prevent it from being bent or punctured during mailing.

This Map was designed by Matthew Carey a Dublin Born Publisher. Who established himself in Philadelphia in the late 18th and early 19th century. He had His most important work was the 1795 American Atlas, which was the first to be published in America. He also had lifelong friendship with Benjamin Franklin. This map is in very good condition and is in a museum mounted frame. The label on the back says published in England, but it was published in Philadelphia. The map shows Texas, New Mexico, and Central America. This will make a good addition to any map collection.

Here Ortelius may have drawn upon a 1575 map of the region by French cartographer Jean Duran. But the principal contributor for this map is thought to be Jeronimo de Chaves(1523-1574) who succeeded Sebastian Cabot as Pilot Major and was appointed royal cosmographer at the Casa de Contratacion. Wonderfully decorative with flamboyant decorative elements, the map provides a fascinating snapshot of Spanish new world ... moreconquest in the 16th century. One of the more sought-after of Ortelius maps, this well-preserved example exhibits hand colour work of the very highest order and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. The first of two magnificent decorative cartouches features a leering horned demon. Two ferocious creatures of indeterminate species, and four"Aztec" faces: A second cartouche features new world fruits. Exotic birds and more Aztec inspired faces.
