PLEASE NOTE: THE PICTURES ARE NOT ON AUCTION. ONLY THE MEDAL. This original cast antique 19th century medal is a pilgrimage medal from the Basilica of Our lady of Guadalupe in Mexico. Its size is 1.25 inches. And it weighs 9 grams. It is one of a handful of pilgrimage site medals, all from the private estate collection of Bertha, the founder of Church-Woman Antique. The story of the 1531 Guadalupe apparition of the Virgin Mother Mary is one of the most fascinating in all of Catholic lore. According to accounts. A poor Indian by the name of Juan Diego came across a vision of what he described as a'lady from heaven' while on a mountainside in Northwest Mexico City. According to Diego, this woman instructed him to create a temple at the site of this vision. In addition, she somehow imprinted her likeness into his cactus-cloth. Although ... moresuch cloth normally deteriorates rapidly over time, Diego's cloth survives to this day, more than 470 years after the apparition, in defiance of scientific rationale. I've been purchasing and collecting vintage jewelry for a long time. Having looked through plenty of display cases at pawn shops, shows, antique stores and estate sales. All items are previously worn, with varying degrees of age/wear/tarnish, and are guaranteed as represented. This Item: Vintage or antique sterling silver Our Lady of Guadalupe pendant medal. Measurement: Pendant measures 1-5/8" long and 1-5/16" across not including the tab with the hole or the attached bale ring. Including the hole tab- measures 1-7/8" long. Weight: Weight of medal without attached silver bale ring is 28.0 grams. Hallmarks/Stamp: Not stamped or marked- tested sterling silver. Condition: Good antique/vintage condition with moderate overall surface wear/tarnish and a few little age dings along the edge. But no damage. The wear on the facial ... morefeatures on both sides is significant, as can easily be seen in the photos. The added bale ring is not soldered, but is heavy enough to wear right away or soldered for security if desired. Comments: This is the largest and heaviest Lady of Guadalupe medal of its age that I was able to find on the Internet. I dug around in one of my many little boxes and added a heavy-duty silver(probably sterling) bale ring so it could be worn right away if desired. Or taken off if not.
