For over 50 years, Mitchell his son's and ... moretheir successors were the most prominent cartographical publishers of maps and atlases in the United States. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut on March 20, 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is know about his early schooling, it is know that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830, which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchells first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finleys New American Atlas in 1831. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. While the map content in Mitchells edition of the New American Atlas are same as Finleys edition, each map has been significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. It measures roughly 24 x 24 inches in size. Please be aware that these National Geographic Maps are anywhere from 10 to 90 years old. They are printed on paper that is not acid free and in most cases have not been stored in the best way. So the maps you are buying may be in a condition that reflects both of these facts. The map you get may be worn or lightly torn along the fold lines due to the acidity of the paper and being folded for years. They may also be discolored or mottling spots again due to the acidity of the paper. The borders of the maps may also have small tears. On occasion maps may smell musty from the way they have been stored in the past. When the map is kept ... morein an open area the musty smell will fade away in time. Cartographer: Alvin Jewett Johnson(September 23. 1827- April 22, 1884) was a prolific American map publisher active from 1856 to the mid-1880s. Johnson was born into a poor family in Wallingford, Vermont where he received only a based public education. Colton and company. The earliest Johnson maps were published with D. Original 1855 Map of Georgetown and Washington DC by Cartographer J H Colton
Description: This is an original Colton map produced in 1855 in New York and marked No. 24. I believe it is hand water colored. It is printed on medium stock paper. Joseph Hutchins Colton was born July 5. 1800 and founded an American map-making company in 1831. This map has the uniqueness of 3 pictograms; the Washington Monument. The Capitol Building and the Smithsonian Institution. Colton created railroad maps. Immigrant guides, folding pocket maps, large wall maps and elaborate atlases. His maps were printed using engraved steel plates which produced higher quality prints. These type of maps had decorative borders and were often individually hand water colored. The exact outside measurements of the map are 15 and 3/4" high by 18 and 7/16' wide. Professional custom framing was $797.40. It is triple matted with double framing under ... morethe glass. This sets the map back away from the glass about 3/4" giving a 3-D look. Overall measurements are 28" x 30" Pictures do not do this framed piece of history any justice. What a great piece for your office or den! Condition: This antique map is in excellent condition. It has some light spotting on the back with very light yellowing. Some dark yellowing is around the border about 1/2" in from the edge. The border has a couple of small tears(1/4" with small piece of both bottom corners missing. Map is mark-free. Antique Map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. The scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements in addition to the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of the page is an impressive 18.5" x 16" The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show the various counties and other divisions. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the time of publication 157 years ago. Condition is very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around the edges, otherwise the ... moremap is very clean. It's not as dark as the photo would suggest. And the printing is sharp and clear. There are some noticeable shadows of printing from the advertisement that was on its opposite page at one time. Clearly visible in the image above. The reverse side is blank. See the image for condition details. But frankly, the image really doesn't do it any justice. We are/will be offering many of these maps on eBay. As well as some of the better advertisements.
