This wonderfully decorative frontispiece inaugurates the Parergon section of the Theatrum. Which presented maps of historical cartography and the ancient world. Rich in allegorical imagery, Ortelius uses the central frame of the print to describe his intentions for the Parergon: Parergon. Or some maps of Ancient Geography. Dear Reader, Our description of the world is herein supplemented with these maps, which were drawn by me for the benefit of students of both sacred and secular ancient history. I had intended to publish them separately from the ... moreTheatrum, as they did not seem relevant to those maps whose purpose is to show locations as they are in the present day. However, owing to the exhortations of friends I place them here at the conclusion of our work as a superfluous addition or Parergon, so to speak. Farewell and make good use of our endeavours. The engraver of the plate is unknown. But it was introduced by the publisher Jan Baptista Vrients(1552-1612) for this 1603 edition replacing a simple frame title that included Ortelius' text since 1579. Vrients was a master engraver so it is reasonable to assume that he conceived and engraved the plate, and it is certainly in the style of works known to have originated from his burin. As the plate was new for this edition, this example is an unusually strong impression and exhibits hand colour work of the very highest order that will make for an elegant presentation if matted and framed. An original copper-engraved title page of Camden's Britannia. Published in 1607/10/37 and engraved by William Hole. This strikingly artistic, superbly detailed, hand coloured title page is framed(410x320mm) and mounted. The printed area measures 260x170mm. The engraving features Neptune and Ceres flanking a central roundel with a map of Britain and eastern Ireland. There is a seated Britannia flanked by mermaids at the top of the page, and images of a ship, the Roman Bath, Winchester Cathedral and Stonehenge at the bottom. 1 Leaf Ornate TITLE PAGE Beautiful Christian Coptic Bible Manuscript from Egypt

I must mention that 35 years ago when we lived in England, my husband bought this fragmentary Coptic handwritten manuscript, and because it was incomplete, I am selling them one leaf at a time. This particular leaf is the ornate title page from that beautiful manuscript. This is a rare illuminated Coptic Christian Bible manuscript leaf. I do not know exactly when this manuscript leaf was written by the scribe. But my best estimate would be either the late 17th century or early 18th century. On thick paper. With some discoloration, especially around the edges of the page, due to age and use. Total size of the page is about 4 1/2 in. x 6 1/2 in. The Coptic text in its distinctive and beautiful large uncial letters starts ... moreon the left of each line. Since it is read from left to right. There are n umerous instances of red rubrication in letters and words. As well as diacritical and punctuation marks. This particular leaf has two(2) large initial letters(see the 5th scanned image) This title page leaf has a very ornate heading with two arches at the bottom. And in these arches are the names of God-on the left"God" in Coptic and on the right"God" in Arabic(see the bottom of the 1st scanned image) The manuscript as a whole contains many instances of the Nomina Sacra or Sacred Names(which are used for such terms as God. Lord, Jesus, Christ, Savior, Father, Son, Holy, Spirit, Cross, and Heaven) and you can tell it is a Nomina Sacra because it has a horizontal line above. And sometimes with red dot(s) above the line. This particular leaf has the following Nomina Sacra: three(3) instances of"Kurios" meaning"The Lord" for one of them.
