Levasseur published several different editions of his North America map- this being the most desirable due to its depictions of the ephemeral Republic of Texas. Though cartographically minimalist, there are a number of additional important elements that are worthy of note. These include the extension of Oregon territory well into British Columbia, reflecting the American claims that later led to the 54 40' dispute. Levasseur composed this map for publication in his magnificent Atlas Nacionale de la France Illustree, one of the most decorative and beautifully produced atlases to appear in the 19th century. This particular map is surrounded by wide and elaborate illustrative border work showing the cultural, natural, and trade richness of the Americas. The left hand side of the map depicts European seamen bargaining for indigenous products. In the background is a Mesoamerican style pyramid, dramatic mountain scenery, and a railroad train. The right hand side of the map shows a cross-section of the flora and fauna common to the continent, including a Bison, vultures, a polar bear, an elk, a fox and an alligator. In the undergrowth, a leopard lies hidden. At the base of the map a classically dressed woman lounges with a St. Bernard and Bale of Cotton. The map depicts Mexico from the Yucatan north to what would soon become the Republic of Texas, the Louisiana Territory, and what would eventually be the U.S. States of New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, California, Nevada, Utah, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Colorado. This map is based largely on the maps of Alexander von Humboldt and Zebulon Pike. The general treatment of the Rocky Mountains is drawn directly from Humboldt important map of 1811, issued just 3 years prior. Description: A nice example of Antonio Zatta's fascinating map of Mexico. Texas, Florida, Louisiana, and Central America. Centered on what would soon be known as Texas, this map covers from the Pacific to the Atlantic, and from the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay tot eh Isthmus of Panama. This remarkable map of the region, which predated Humboldt's landmark map of 1810, illustrates just how little was known of the American southwest north of Mexico. Cartographically Zatta offers little new information– for none was forthcoming form the Americas at the time– and derives most of this map from the work of Robert de Vaugondy, ... moresome 10 year prior. The mission settlements along the Rio del Nord(Rio Grande) are well noted, but other regions to the north and west remain paese incognito. Zatta sets the Rio del Palma as the northern border of New Spain(Mexico) and the border of Louisiana just west of the Mississippi, clearly defining the regional boundaries of Nuovo Messico roughly along the lines of early 19th century Texas. The Mississippi Valley itself is poorly represented, as is Florida, whose southern top is a network of islands and canals– a common if primitive attempt to describe the Everglades. The lower left bears an interesting title cartouche decorated with curious flora supposedly indigenous to the region. Original, steel-engraved map of North America, including Texas as a Republic, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Printed in the 19th century, on quality paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. With beautiful original hand color. Note Texas- gives the population as 500.000 and shows an outline shape closer to the Republic. Tall masted sailing ships in the Oceans, the entire Southwest is a vast empty interior. In near VG or better condition. Light minor age wear, overall very presentable and attractive[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing. A nice impression of an interesting antique map which will look nice when displayed. Each sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. Most of the time any edge splits are short. Minor, insignificant and have been closed- either long ago or more recently with small pieces of archival tape. Most often these splits are trivial and easy to overlook visually. Basically, they would not significantly affect the piece adversely. The item is offered as seen. Please look carefully and make your decision knowing this antique image is nice. But it is not in perfect"like new" condition. However, with whatever flaws it possesses, it remains entirely worthy of ownership and inclusion in any related collection. We feel it will prove very pleasing to its new owner.
