Printed on quality paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. This small cerographic map produced to appear within a now very scarce History of the Country book. There is text on the verso which indicates and confirms this origin. A map virtually never encountered in any other format. And indeed virtually never in this one. In near VG or better condition. Mostly clean and attractive, minor light surface age wear, very faint diagonal crease to bottom left corner[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] Text on verso as issued. There are a few minor smudges around the margin, otherwise the map image is very clean in general with bright color and a nice antique quality that would frame up well. The pics are of the actual map and very accurate of condition and color in general, however the actual map looks much better. This map is copyrighted 1891. It is from a 1895 Rand McNally Enlarged Business Atlas. McNally did not update their city maps each year as they did the state railroad maps. It measures close to 28 X 20 inches. Would look fantastic framed under glass. According to worldcat.org. There are only a few maps in the reference collections from this atlas. No other atlas exists from this year, so the maps are a treasure to behold, and great investment. Possibly the only known copies. The map is a double page of continuous paper with a binding strip on the back for insertion in the hard bound book and measures paper size 14 ½” by 22 ¼” with a 13 ½” by 20 ¼” image. The top edge of the map includes Fort Point and the map extends to the West End Syndicate and Bay Park Homestead. It includes Golden Gate Park. Rancho Laguna, Ingleside Race Track and University Mound. There are two small tears. One on the bottom fold and one about an inch to the right, with small folds at two upper corners not affecting the image. The back of the double truck is printed with the maps of Seattle and Dallas. San Francisco Bay, California. It is dated 1851 and was published in 1852 in a government report by the United States Coast Survey. Condition: Like many government fold-out maps of the mid-19th century. It is printed on a lightweight paper. The paper has toned slightly with age, and there is one vertical fold, as issued. There's a tiny spot on the fold and no marks. Rips, or tears. The map is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. This is an original. Authentic U.S. Coast Survey document, not a reproduction or modern reprint. And it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. The Alcatraz Island Light was the first lighthouse built on the West Coast.
