It is from the 1874 edition of Stieler's Hand Atlas. Published in Gotha by Justus Perthes. The map is by the great German cartographer of the era. Augustus Petermann(1822-1878) best know for Petermann’s geographische Mitteilungen. The leading geographical journal of the day supplying the world with maps and information on newly explored regions around the world including the Arctic and Africa. His maps were certainly among the most accurate and detailed of the period and led the way to a new school of cartography often referred to as the"Gotha School. ... moreHis maps continued to be used and revised for years after his death in 1878 and his Mitteilungen continued until 2004. After 1865. Petermann was given the responsibility of the cartography for the Stieler Atlas and in coordination with other cartographers in the firm, he guided the production of the atlas until his death overseeing the designs and revisions based on recent discoveries. The publisher and date are shown on the map in the bottom margin and the name of the atlas is in the upper right corner and Petermann's name in the upper left corner. The map is not mounted nor matted, being sold as a single sheet with a centerfold as seen in the first pic. Size: The map image measures approximately 13 by 16 inches(34x40) on a 15 by 18 1/2" 38x47cm) page as seen in the pic with a wide margin all around for framing as seen in the main pic. Condition: The map is in Fair condition with some darkening along the fold. Blank on the reverse, stenciled hand coloring and outlining and a centerfold as issued, printed on heavy paper. 1952 Double Sided European (Soviet Russia) Silk Map
This auction is for a 1952 double sided silk map featuring the then Soviet Russia controlled areas of Khar'Kov and Rostov. Which was released by the G.S.G.S. The maps themselves are both revised copies of maps previously put out by the War Office in response to geographical and political changes by 1952. Both sides of the maps were produced in 1952, however, the Rostov side of the map is a 5th edition re release(update) of a 1918 map and the Khar'Kov side is a 2nd edition re release of a 1948 map. To the best of my knowledge, these silk maps were given to pilots in case they were shot down over these territories. The maps are in excellent condition with no rips or stains and can be hung up or folded for display or storage. I am by no means an expert in this area. So if there are any questions, feel free to ask.

Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut on March 20, 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is know about his early schooling, it is know that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830, which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchells first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finleys New American Atlas in 1831. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. While the map content in Mitchells edition of the New American Atlas are same as Finleys edition, each map has been significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. Guillaume de l'Isle(1675-1726) was son of a cartographer and a pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive.

1859, RUSSIA IN EUROPE, A & C Black Atlas, Antique Map
An attractive double-page map published in the 1859 edition of Black’s General Atlas Of The World. Printed block colours with the outlines added by hand. The sheet measures approx 44cm x 62cm with a horizontal fold as issued. Condition is good. Printed on heavy paper. The map image remains clean and bright. There is off–setting from the block colours which appears as light browning. A few small marks and light brown spots, but minor; a couple of tiny pinholes. The margins are grubbier with some soft creasing, faint brown spotting and some light handling grubbiness. Verso blank. The map will be posted rolled in a wide-diameter posting tube. Unfortunately the tube will have to be longer than 45cm so first class postage is £5.65 plus £1.10 for the tube.
