State& city maps are some of the most ornate and beautifully coloured maps published in the US in the 19th century. For over 50 years. Samuel Augustus Mitchell and his successors and son were one of the most prominent publishers of maps and atlases in the United States. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut on March 20, 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is know about his early schooling, it is know that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830, which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchells first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finleys New American Atlas in 1831. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. While the map content in Mitchells edition of the New American Atlas are same as Finleys edition, each map has been significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. This is especially true in the South and West. Finley had originally collaborated with D.H. Vance and J.H. Young in the preparation of the maps. Vances name is removed from the Mitchell edition. This is an early(late 1900s/early 1920s) Rand McNally Vest Pocket Map that sold for 25 cents originally. Judging by the ad on the back. Which features a WW1 flyer as an example of modern airmen- this map has some age on it! There is a smudge of red paint on the cover, and two old tape repairs to the reverse side of the bottom edge. Otherwise, it folds out perfectly with no seam splits or stains. Densely packed for sure, but still legible and in fine condition. From a non-smoking home. US postage is $3.50.

This is a great wallet change purse billfold with the design of the New York City Subway map on it. There is a label inside saying that it is official MTA licensed merchandise This is not the design that the MTA currently uses and I see that some train lines on here no longer run while it is missing some of the newer lines. I would say this is from sometime in the 1990's. I'm really not sure. It is certainly based on an earlier subway map than the one that we use now. It is made of leatherette, soft plastic or vinyl. It is a tri fold wallet that closes with a snap. When fully open it has three card slots in the center. 2 card slots on one side and a full open bill holder. It also has a change purse with a zipper closure. It has also an outside ID holder with a clear plastic window. Both the snap and the zipper are silver tone. A vintage 1950s-1960s watch in a folding case shaped as a globe showing the continents in gold on a silver background. Marked on the fob loop Germany and on the face GOOOOS 15 Jewels. The case presses together to protect the face of the watch. The watch has a Swiss movement and is wound up using the winder on the top of the case. Such a pretty case and a unusual shape. Published by Edward Denny& Co. of San Francisco, the map s hows the towns of Napa and parts of Sonoma County including the town of Sonoma. Ranchos, township and section lines, tracts, roads, wagon roads, railroads, trails, schools, parks, rivers and creeks. The map is in very good to excellent condition. The body of the map is unmarked with crisp folds. There are no tears, stains or markings. Coin and pocket watch are commemorative. Acknowledging the 150th anniversary since the start of civil war in 1861. The coin is gold plated and sealed in a plastic holder. I don't know if watch is gold plated or gold colored. It is new and I removed plastic stopper on battery so it would run. Keeps correct time. Great items for collector. The map is the first day battle lines of the battle of Gettysburg. The coin is an 1865 British penny. The confederacy often used British currency as money due to the collapse of confederate dollar. I don't have much information on the items or origin. I bought an abandoned foot locker at auction and these items were stored in a vintage cigar box. Had meaning and value to someone. The item is in good condition considering it's age but is in delicate condition. All the pages are intact(including fold out map) but does have some binding crease and worn away between the staples and discolored pages. The overall size is approximately 6 1/2"L x 4 1/4"W. This is a delicate item and I took as many photo's as possible without trying to disturb and flip through the pages. The map itself doesn't look as if it has been opened too many times. The body of the map is unmarked with crisp folds. There are no tears, stains or markings. The map has separated slightly from the original glue backing( see pic) but it is still stable. The front cover is lightly scuffed with bumped corners. There is a pencil notation on the front.
