Artists and Engravers: Abraham Ortelius was born 1528 in Antwerp. He studied mathematics. Greek and Latin and travelled a lot across Europe. He established a business in dealing with books and drawing maps. His first remarkable map was a 8 sheet world map in the year 1564, but only three copies have survived. In 1570 he issued the"Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" the first modern"Atlas" with uniformly sized maps in a systematic collection. The term"Atlas" was not used until Mercator introduced it 20 years later. Most of the maps in Theatrum have been engraved by Frans Hogenberg. At the time of publication, the atlas was the most expensive book ever printed. Nevertheless it was a big success and around 7000 copies have been printed until 1612 in many editions and six different languages. Beside the Theatrum, Ortelius compiled a series of historical maps and published it in the"Parergon Theatri" which was bound with the Theatrum from 1579 onwards or published separately. Augustus Mitchell click image to enlarge This beautifully hand coloured original antique map was published by Samuel Augustus Mitchell in the 1870 edition of his large New General Atlas- dated at the foot of the map. These county. State, city& country maps are some of the most ornate and beautifully coloured maps published in the US in the 19th century. For over 50 years, Mitchell his son's and their successors were the most prominent cartographical publishers of maps and atlases in the United States. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut on March 20, 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is know about his early schooling, it is know that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830, which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchells first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finleys New American Atlas in 1831. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. While the map content in Mitchells edition of the New American Atlas are same as Finleys edition, each map has been significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. 1825 Pocket Map of United States East of Rockies Schoyer for Finley Hand Colored
Here we have a really wonderful 1825 folding pocket map of The United States with all hand water colored borders and southern states. We believe this map can be attributed to Solomon Schoyer who was in affiliation with Anthony Finley during the 1824-1826 period. This map is the same as the 1826 map by Schoyer and therefore we believe it is a derivative of Finley's. There is no maker. Publisher or engraver listed on the map however it is in the style of the Finley maps of 1824-1826. This pocket map covers from just west of the Rocky Mountains Eastward to the Atlantic Seaboard and from Canada to Mexico. It encompass's all of the territory claimed by The United States between the 1806-07 period of Louis& Clark and 1836 Texas Revolution. The topography is rendered. There are numerous rivers marked, and many Native American Indian ... morenations noted throughout. Some of the Native American territories noted are those of Cherokees. Cumanches, Choctows, Chickasaws& Quapaws. The Northwest Territory boarders are represented with Chippeways. Menononies, and Winnebagos all noted. This 1825 folding map is hand water colored in yellow. Pink, blue& green pastels to define the state and territorial boundaries. Florida and Louisiana are fully hand colored. Just inside of the neat-line is hand colored in yellow and prime meridian is Washington, DC. The full title of this pocket map is"Map of The United States drawn from the most approved surveys 1825" as depicted on the front. From neat-line to neat-line it measures 41cm by 51cm and over all it measures 42.5cm by 52.5cm. This pocket map folds into dark blue stiff textured covers creating a book measuring 14.75cm by 9cm. The front cover is very simply marked with"U. STATES" embossed in gilt. It is blank on the verso and there is some pass through staining from the hand coloring of borders on the front. Antique 1833 H. Phelps Map of the United States. Folding/Pocket. I purchased this antique map from a clean. Smoke-free home at a recent estate auction in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was published by H. Phelps, New York, in 1833. This map measures approximately 20" x 16" when unfolded. There are some tears, mostly along the seams, the longest being approximately 5-1/2" in length. I've included close-up photos of the most notable tears. The cover is sturdy and shows average wear including some staining and rubbing. There is writing inside the stiff cardboard cover, and on the back of a couple of map panels at the back of the booklet(see photos) See multiple photos for a great snapshot of the contents and condition of this scarce antique map.
