It is a rare vest pocket map which measures 20 1/2 by 28 inches when fully unfolded. The copyright date of 1907 is printed on the map. In EXCELLENT condition. Complete with no tears, these maps are rare enough but in this condition they are exceedingly scarce. Originally from the estate of Dr. Louis A. Sexton. Keeler, an engineer working in the Indian Bureau, published a large, attractive map of the entire country west of the Mississippi. Keeler first issued this map in 1867 on a much larger format but covering a smaller area. The first edition, most examples of which were prepared as presentation copies for government officials and railroad magnates, remains quite common and measures some 47.5 x 57.5 inches. The limited market for presentation pieces no doubt encouraged Keeler to issues to two new editions in 1868 on a reduced scale. While it is not clear which of the second editions came first, or if they were published simultaneously, they are distinguishable by their size. 1977 University of Kentucky Campus Pocket Map with B&W Photos
University of Kentucky Campus Map. Printed June 1977, very lightly used. No marks or tears, but the paper does have some yellowing on the edges from age. There's a faint fold mark from side-to-side on the center of the front of the map when folded that goes through all layers, and another 1/4 of the way down that goes through all layers of the back of the folded map. These actually look like factory folds, as if the map was originally folded in a different way. In great shape for being 36 years old. Folded size is 3 3/8" x 5 1/2" Open, it measures 16 1/2" x 11" Map side has buildings numbered to correspond to alphabetized list on reverse side; map coordinates also listed for building locations. This is for a perfectly preserved Victorian map measuring tool called a Curvimeter. It has a beautiful wooden turned handle and a wheel which travels along a threaded bar. The handle is particularly finely turned with an ornate finial on the tip. The idea is to run the wheel along roads. Waterways, walkways or railway lines on a map, taking in all the turns and curves and then reverse it back along the maps scale thus telling you how far the route you just measured is.very simple, very clever and of course timeless, it is still totally usable today on OS maps, you can find out exactly how far you just walked or are planning to walk. circa 1900 Bartholomew's Pocket Plan Map of Edinburgh & Suburbs, early Railways
Probably dating from 1900 this is one of Bartholomew's pocket maps on linen. Cost 2/6 when first on sale! Map size 26" by 20" In good condition- no tears. Couple of pencil markings(mostly in the sea! do not detract. One of the features shown is the new Caledonian line under construction from Newhaven to the Eastern docks The Caledonian Railway's last new line in Edinburgh was part of the ill-fated Leith New Lines project. The line which was built originated at Newhaven Junction on the North Leith branch. And ran south east around the edge of Leith. Before turning north towards a new terminus at South Leith and a spur from Seafield Junction to the eastern docks. It opened to goods traffic on 1 August 1903. WALKER'S VEST POCKET MAP OF BOSTON CIRCA 1910
Up for bid is this rare Walker's Vest Pocket Map of Boston. Published by Walker Lithograph Co in Boston circa 1910. Giving All points of Interest with every Railway and Steamboat Terminus(including White Star Line, who was the owner of the Titanic) Map is in fairly good condition for it's age but did suffer some water damage which caused the orange jacket to bleed onto the map. Map is heavily creased from being folded for 100 years but does not have any tearing along the crease lines. The best way to explain the condition of the jacket is to examine the pictures. After doing some extensive research, it appears that this is only the third copy known to exist, according to OCLC and ABAA. Shipping is"FREE" and will ship by USPS First Class Mail. Titled: COLTON'S SECTIONAL MAP OF IOWA This 37" X 29" map is an 1871 published version of the map copyrighted in 1864 persumably updated with infrastructure improvements within the state. The 4" X 6" gilt lettered brown cloth bound cover is in good condition. The inside advertising sheet has what is assumed to be the original owners name D. Arnold and 34th Dist. written in fountain pen. The most recent owner had displayed the map thumb tacked to a board so there are 2 tack holes in the back cover and 6 other holes at the corners and top and bottom center. Prior to mounting scotch tape had been applied to openings at intersection folds. The ... moretape has since fallen off leaving an adhesive stain in these areas. There are other small defects that can be seen in the photos but overall the map is in very good condition. Rare Antique 1886 SMITH'S DRIVING MAP OF PHILADELPHIA & VICINITY Pocket Fold-Out
I will be listing a variety of nice Antique and Vintage Items this week. Here is a Scarce 1886 LARGE FOLD-OUT POCKET MAP Entitled"NEW DRIVING MAP OF PHILADELPHIA AND VICINITY" Published by J.L. SMITH. Philadelphia. PA, 1886. Entrance Date of 1882 below border line. Map is approx. 44" x 27-1/4" Map with the original Gilt-Stamped Binding is in poor"As Found" condition from estate. Map is almost all there with exception of few small spots. But map is presently like a jigsaw puzzle torn apart in a number of pieces, with some small loose pieces being adhesive stuck to a remnant backing paper. Some of this other backing paper is still stuck at the glue spots on the back. The left half of map is actually in decent condition with exception of the stain spots, but the right half has all the torn sections and little loose ... morepieces. I assume map was once framed in it's history with the brown adhesive tack spots around edges and map torn out of the pocket binding. There are also tape remnants all around the exterior edges of the binding where I assume binding was presented with the map on the frame. Still, an interesting and impressive-size antique map of Philadelphia worthy of some attention. Look for my other Old Maps and Items I will be listing as well. ♠ M. Vintage Pocket Map of Chicago 31-1/2 x 22” that fold up into a brochure size cover made of sturdy cardstock. This map is estimated to be from the 1940-50’s. However, I cannot find a date on it anywhere. This was published by Rand McNally& Co and the original price of 25 cents on the front cover. The maps shows: Streets and Boulevards, Street Number Plan, Street Car Lines, Elevated Lines, Bus Lines and Railroads. The cover of the map has wear including some light to med. random creasing. Also the cover has edge and corner wear but the map is in very good to near mint condition. I don’t think it was ever opened before me. The back cover has the same type of creasing as the front cover and has two pictorial advertisements on the back, see photo. It has 25 map plates and the first gives details of the Electric Railways(tube railways) in the centre of London. The second map plate lists the Railway Company names and shows the routes in colour on the map. Maps three and four are three dimensional showing the'theatre area' and City of London with their buildings. Maps 5- 22 are area maps in the scale of 2 inches to 1 mile. Map 23 covers Kew, Richmond and Kingston. Map 24 shows Londons environs and map 25 is a map of Kew Gardens. The remaining pages of the book gives information on the more important buildings and structures, and an index to the sectional maps. A later underground map has been pasted into the inside front cover, and this map is an older tube map possibly dating around 1913. Condition/ Defects: The book is complete though it has been well used. Several pages are loose. A few have some pencil annotation in blank areas, but are generally clean, and all are legible. The map is has several splits at the folds. It also has insect damage. With holes in the MA Bay area at the top right, at the leftmost bottom vertical fold, and at the horizontal mid fold just to the left of the western border of CT. Bartholomew London Pocket Atlas Here we have for auction this interesting snapshot of London in 1947. Printed by Scottish mapmakers Bartholomew. It is a cloth bound pocket atlas, showing the central parts of London in colour maps, outlying areas in black and white, and a variety of floor plans of tourist attractions such as St Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London and the British Museum, as well as a black and white Underground map. There is also a complete Street List and Building list in the back, documenting many streets and areas which will have now disappeared. Cheaply mass produced. It has the feel of an old children's book, with card covers with cloth backing- these were meant to be cheap, disposable items and not many survive in good condition. Although it has been used, the book is in good condition, with ... moreno marks or damage, though the cloth cover has slight fading and one corner is slightly peeling. This is an Original 1834 Mitchell's Tourist's Foldout Pocket Map of OHIO with 1830 Census. J. H. Young Philadelphia- published by S. Augustus Mitchell. Unfolded the map is approximately 15&1/4" x 13" The size of the booklet it is enclosed in is approximately 4&3/4" x 3" There is a little spotting to the map from age(see photos) but no apparent rips. Tears or other stray marks on the paper. There is also an 1830 census of Ohio on the inside of the cover.
