End of Blackwell's Island to Lawrence's Point including Little Hell Gate and Mouth of Harlem River. Description: An extremely scarce and important 1891 nautical chart or maritime map depicting New York City's Hell Gate. The East River, the Harlem River, Roosevelt Island(Blackwell's Island) Ward's Island, and Randall's Island, as well as portions of adjacent Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. As suggested by the title, the map focuses on the East River from the southern tip of Roosevelt Island northwards to the northern tip of Randall's Island and the Harlem River. The three islands are particularly well mapped with superb inland detail ... morewith individual buildings and roadways identified. The Queens and Manhattan portions of the map are detailed only along the riverside. The real focus of the map is the river itself. The passage between Roosevelt Island and Ward Island was first named Helegat, meaning'bright passage' by the Dutch Explorer Adriaen Block in 1614. When the English moved in it was Anglicized to Hell Gate, arguably a more appropriate term since the shoals and the violent swirling tidal flux proved the demise of many ships. To sailors the gate appeared as'a giant whirlpool, punctuated with rocks, reefs, and islands. Original 1873 Map CITY OF BROOKLYN New York Greenpoint Williamsburg Flatbush Original antique lithographed map of the city of Brooklyn. Printed more than 140 years ago. The map shows Brooklyn as an independent city. 25 years before it was consolidated with the other boroughs to form the modern"City of New York. The map is hand colored by ward. And when it was printed Brooklyn included the neighborhoods of Bushwick, Bedford, Greenpoint, and Williamsburg. Other named places and features include Prospect Park, Greenwood Cemetery, Wallabout Bay, the U.S. Navy Yard, the Brooklyn City Hall, Tompkins Square, Buttermilk Channel, and Gowanus Bay. The map also shows railroad and streetcar lines. As well as ferry crossings on the East River. There are hundreds of street names, and a decorative swash title, with distance scale. The map also includes ... moreparts of Flatbush and New Utrecht. Which did not become part of Brooklyn until 1894, and it labels the Coney Island Plank Road, Lunatic Asylum, Alms House, Halls Driving Park, Kings County Parade Ground, and Fort Hamilton Avenue. Printed on heavy paper, blank on the reverse with original handcolor as issued. It is basically as seen in the pics, with overall tonal aging and slight darkening around the edges. There are a few minor smudges around the margin, slightly nicked corners, otherwise the map image is very clean in general with bright color and a nice antique quality that is rare to fine in this condition. The pics are of the actual map and very accurate of condition and color in general, however the actual map looks much better. You are viewing an amazing original engraving/print. I'm not sure of the correct printing terminology(print/engraving/etching? A bird's eye view of New York City in 1868. Times have changed! Included in the view are parts of New Jersey and the outer boroughs of the city and Long Island. Brooklyn was at the time the third largest city in the USA! Around the edges there are notations lined up with the prominent features in the the print. The detail is amazing. all the buildings. Steeples, river boats! All the trains on the New Jersey side. One could stare at this for hours. The quality and shear draftsmanship skills are mind numbing. How long did it take to do this! This was once a part of a visitors guide book as a fold out map. It is titled" New York and Environs,The New York Manual" It has some issues: some fading(from ... morethe original printing process) two small professionally stabilized old tears and some small tears and missing bits around the left edge. where it was torn out of the guide book. And of course the original guide book" folds" But when placed in the mat(included in this offering) it looks great.The mat hides the tears. The successful buyer can have the mat opening enlarged, depending on how much they choose to show of edge detail. The pictures don't show it as well as it actually looks when holding it in front of you. The diagonal dark line(see lower left quadrant picture) is not as noticeable as in the picture and the browning in one of the pictures is not there(some sort of reflection) The dimensions of the print to the extreme ends are roughly 17" wide by 12 1/2" high.
