Description: A rare and unusual map of upper Manhattan. New York City, prepared and printed for inclusion in the Thirteenth Annual Report of the Board of Commissioners of the Central Park. It depicts the Island of Manhattan north of 155th street including the districts of Inwood, Harlem, and Washington Heights. The plan for much of Manhattan, south of 155th street, was originally laid out by John Randel in his ... more1811 Map of the City of New York or as it is otherwise known the'Commissioner's Plan' This ambitions project transformed nearly 12,000 acres of wilderness into a massive urban grid. Nonetheless, by 1860, New York City’s development had exceeded even Randel’s expectations. The Central Park Commission was granted the responsibility of laying out the street system and public areas of the undeveloped parts of Manhattan northward of 155th street. Consequently the 13th Annual Commissioner’s Report included this map which offers considerable detail regarding proposed street layouts, waterways, and public areas, both proposed and developed. Also depicts the suggested bulkhead development extending the shoreline along both the eastern and western parts of Manhattan Island. When this map was made much of this region remained undeveloped farmland and semi-suburban properties, as is reflected by some of the topography and buildings indicated, especially in the western part of the city. Description: An altogether extraordinary 1868 map of New York City’s Central Park and the Upper West Side prepared and printed for inclusion in the Thirteenth Annual Report of the Board of Commissioners of the Central Park. This is an extremely rare variant on the map of Central Park that originally appeared in the 1862 Commissioner's Report. This map depicts the park as a whole and includes pathways. You are bidding on an antique map of New York City. Manhattan on one side and the other boroughs with a focus on Brooklyn on the reverse side. Fold out map of Manhattan is approx 14x22. The reverse side has writing and an approx 11x14 map of Brooklyn and the other boroughs. There is on brown spot to the left of Central Park seen in the photos. It carries through to the Brooklyn side and is shown in the photos. It's about the size of the tip of a pencil eraser. This is a true antique map, not a reprint or reproduction. But they came out of a loose leaf binder that has a copyright date of 1919, see above scan of copyright date. Map will come carefully rolled in kraft paper and inside a strong pvc mailing tube. We do not mail flat due to maps being folded. Shoved through mail slots and arriving in terrible condition. We like to get maps to our customers in the same condition as they left. Description: An altogether extraordinary hand colored map of New York City's Central Park prepared and printed for inclusion in the Fifth Annual Report of the Board of Commissioners of the Central Park. This map first appeared in 1861. With the present example being the 1862 second state. The map depicts the park as a whole and includes pathways, lakes, buildings, individual trees, rocks, and elevation measurements. The streets and avenues surrounding the park as well as the tramways that existed at the time are also noted. The careful observer will note that only the southern portion of the park is colorized- this is meant to highlight those ... moreparts of the park where consturction had been completed, the remainder of the park was still under construction. This extraordinary map reveals Central Park as conceived by the Landscape Architects, and indeed'artists' Vaux and Olmstead. Vaux and Olmstead were awarded the task of designing Central Park in 1853 by the City Common Council. Olmstead's vision drove the overall design while Vaux concentrated his attentions on bridges, buildings, and other structures within the park. The creation of Central Park, which was to consist of some 800 acres of public forest, pathways, promenades, lakes, bridges, and meadows, was a seminal moment in civic urban design. The park itself was designed as a whole with every tree, pond, and bench meticulously planned. Original Large Vintage Hammond Map of New York City Circa 1920 Ready for Framing
We are offering a vintage folding Hammond map of New York City. Measuring 35-1/2" x 22" These were produced so that various companies and merchants could put their imprimateur on them; this one was from the Burnet Company of South Street, New York, which was a marine supply outfit. The map is undated. But it lists John D. Newton as President of the Burnet Company, and online records indicate Mr. Newton was secretary of that company in 1915. So we can give a rough date for the map of 1920 or thereabouts. Experts on New York history could probably date it more precisely. The map folds down to fit inside its protective cover, which measures 8-1/4" x 4" The map has been folded and stored for many decades. The paper is in fine condition but fragile. In unfolding it just now. We unfortunately put a 1-1/4" tear in the bottom ... morealong a fold. So we warn the successful bidder, USE EXTREME CARE WHEN HANDLING THIS OLD PAPER ITEM. The tear will not show when the map is framed and it does not extend into the printed map portion. There is also another small wear hole in Welfare Island, which can be seen if you zoom one of the photos. The map depicts New York from Van Cortlandt Park and Hunters Island on the north end. Down to Flatbush and the Battery Park Aquarium on the south. It has incredible detail. It also has, on the right side, two additional maps. The top one depicts the New York metro area. This is your chance to own a map that can be the centerpiece of your collection. Cartographer: Joseph Hutchins Colton(July 5. 1800- July 29, 1893) often publishing as J. H. Colton, was an important American map and atlas publisher active from 1833 to 1893(though the firm continued to published in 1897) Colton's firm arose from humble beginnings when he moved to New York in 1831 and befriended the established engraver Samuel Stiles. Colton recognized an emerging ... moremarket in railroad maps and immigrant guides. Not a cartographer or engraver himself, Colton's initial business practice mostly involved purchasing the copyrights of other cartographers, most notably David H. Burr, and reissuing them with updated engraving and border work. His first maps, produced in 1833, were based on earlier Burr maps and depicted New York State and New York City. Between 1833 and 1855 Colton would proceed to publish a large corpus of guidebooks and railroad maps which proved to be very popular. In the early 1850s Colton brought his two sons, George Woolworth Colton(1827- 1901) and Charles B. Colton(1832- 1916) into the map business. G. W. Colton, trained as a cartographer and engraver, was particularly inspired by the idea of creating a large and detailed world atlas to compete established European firms for the U.S. market.
