This map was included in many editions of Blaeu atlases published subsequently by Blaeu's son and successor(1599-1673) and this example is a fine early impression with no text on verso. Blaeu based the cartography in part on a 1631 chart by by Dutch East India Company principal cartographer(1580-1632) as well as his own West Indische Paskaert of 1630 and added a rich array of decorative elements making it one ... moreof the most sought-after 17th century maps of the region. The map presents three fine compass roses with radiating rhumb lines. Five ships and three fine cartouches including a rather bizarre menagerie in the title cartouche. Wonderfully decorative and historically important, this well preserved example will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the title cartouche presented by twin putti with a host of new world critters- note hanging turtle"pendant. Map names both Florida and Virginia. And Gerritsz is believed to have consulted some Spanish sources for the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The mouth and course of the Mississippi River are displaced far to the west of their actual location and are shown roughly where Galveston Harbor and Sabine Lake are now. In today’s Texas, this map notes several mines and Indian villages including a stylized typee. Expanding upon Hennapin’s work, Ruyter includes a number of bays in southwestern Florida and adds the Negrillos Islands. The fascinating allegorical title cartouche in the upper right quadrant of this map deserves special attention. Instead, Hall is following Escalante's discoveries as recorded on the Miera map. The Escalante expedition actually visited Utah Lake(identified here as Teguayo) but only heard about the Great Salt Lake from local Native American Ute tribe. Miera, Escalante's cartographer, thus mapped Timpanagos as much larger than the unseen'Great Salt Lake' Hall also maps the apocryphal Buenaventura River running from the Rocky Mountains westward through'Salt Lake' and westward to San Francisco Bay. The Buenaventura is the last incarnation of the apocryphal River of the West, a long sought after speculative alternative to the Northwest Passage. This is an intriguing copper plate engraving of discoveries pertaining to the lower Mississippi River and Gulf of Mexico including Cuba and the Bahamas. The focus is on French discoveries including La Salle's tragic exploration. The scene of La Salle's death at the hands of his own crew is depicted in the large elaborate cartouche. Many Indian villages are named and several early forts are shown, including one at New Orleans that is not yet named.
