Centered on what would soon be known as Texas, this map covers from the Pacific to the Atlantic, and from the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay tot eh Isthmus of Panama. This remarkable map of the region, which predated Humboldt's landmark map of 1810, illustrates just how little was known of the American southwest north of Mexico. Cartographically Zatta offers little new information– for none was forthcoming form the Americas at the time– and derives most of this map from the work of Robert de Vaugondy, ... moresome 10 year prior. The mission settlements along the Rio del Nord(Rio Grande) are well noted, but other regions to the north and west remain paese incognito. Zatta sets the Rio del Palma as the northern border of New Spain(Mexico) and the border of Louisiana just west of the Mississippi, clearly defining the regional boundaries of Nuovo Messico roughly along the lines of early 19th century Texas. The Mississippi Valley itself is poorly represented, as is Florida, whose southern top is a network of islands and canals– a common if primitive attempt to describe the Everglades. The lower left bears an interesting title cartouche decorated with curious flora supposedly indigenous to the region. Published in Zatta's 1795 Atlante Novissimo a monumental four volume opus and one of the last great decorative atlases of the 18th century. Description: A fine example of the scarce 2nd edition of Johnson’s map of the southwestern United States printed in 1861. The map covers from the 42nd parallel south to the Mexico border and from the Pacific to include most of Colorado. In the second edition of this map Johnson made significant changes. Adding some territorial borders and eliminating others to accommodate the ephemeral political situation of the period. This map’s most significant change is the inclusion of Colorado territory, which was incorporated in February of 1861, just at this map was about to hit the presses. The Colorado Gold Region, which had been discovered only a ... morefew years previous in 1858, is clearly labeled as are all three Parks. Auraria(modern day Denver) is identified as the territorial capital. Nevada too became a territory in 1861. The outbreak of the Civil War and the wealth of silver under Virginia City(here identified as‘Mormon Settlement’ hastened the conferment of territorial status on Nevada. The new borders of Nevada as set in the territorial charter forced Johnson to revise his 1860 map, moving the Utah-Nevada border three degrees west to longitude 116 and the California border westward to the Sierra Nevada range. This unusual choice infringed upon California’s border charter inciting a border dispute between the two regions. The dispute was formally resolved in 1863 roughly according to the original California charter. This is the only example of Johnson’s southwest map to show Nevada’s original territorial border configuration. In New Mexico and Arizona Johnson has removed the latitudinal border between New Mexico and Arizona that he included in the 1860 edition of his atlas. Description: The scarcest and most historically significant of A. J. Johnson’s southwest series. This is the 1860 first edition of A. J. Johnson and Ross C. Browning’s map of California. Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, and Arizona. The map covers from the 42nd parallel south to the Mexico border and from the Pacific to modern day Colorado. Though later editions of the Johnson atlas are common, the 1860 edition, which was Johnson’s first, had the smallest print run of the entire series and for all intent and purposes, unobtainable. Unlike most maps in the 1860 Johnson atlas, this map was a unique production and therefore not based upon the earlier atlas maps ... moreof J. H. Colton. Rather, it seems that Johnson derived this map by dissecting the plates of his 1859 wall map of North America and then incorporating, oftentimes superimposing, more contemporary detail. Such is the case in the Nevada– Utah territory, where both territories are labeled Utah, despite being split in half along longitude 113 and the miss-mapped Sevier/ Santa Clara River. Johnson revised this curious border to strictly adhere longitude 116 in the subsequent 1861 edition of this map. Eastern Utah here extends well into modern day Colorado incorporating Middle Park, but not North Park and South Park, within its borders. The Colorado Gold Region, which was first discovered in 1858, is well labeled. Subsequent editions of this map, published in 1861 shortly after the incorporation of Colorado, revise this border to include the territory. California, and San Blas, Mexico, published in 1825 by order of Senor Don Guadalupe Victoria, the first president of the Republic of Mexico. Essentially two maps on a single sheet, this map highlights the starting point(San Blas) an ending point(San Diego) of the Spanish supply route to southern California. The upper map focuses on San Diego Bay, covering the region from Puerto Falso(Mission Harbor) to Punta de Arena. The fortress of San Diego(the Presidio) the Ranchera de Choyas, the Poblacion ... moreof San Diego(Mission of San Diego) and a ranch and Indian village in the southwestern part of the bay, among other sites, are all noted. The lower map, focusing on San Blas details the Bay from the Rio de Santiago to the village of San Blas, today a small fishing village near Puerto Vallarta. Both maps offer numerous depth soundings, references to shoals, reefs, and other undersea dangers, and notes on anchorage. The armorial crest of Mexico appears in the lower left quadrant. Though ostensibly similar to the map of the same regions published by Perouse in his 1797 atlas, this is in truth a different map with the apparent similarity stemming from the fact that both maps are drawn from the same source– the pioneering cartography of Juan Pantoja y Arrianga. Pantoja was the navigator and cartographer of the Frigate Princesa, which was commissioned, in 1782 to supply Spain’s few colonial outposts along the remote California coastline. The Princesa sailed from the harbor of San Blas to San Diego where, during a seven week break, Pantoja produced the first accurate survey of San Diego Bay. This is a large 1898 Railroad Map of Mexico. The whole sheet measures 28 X 20 inches. It is quite detailed. Showing some topography, towns, transportation lines, and other landmarks as they existed in 1898. On its face it has a listing of the Railroads in existence at the time. See scan below. This map is wax engraved and was issued as part of the Rand McNally Enlarged Business Atlas. To be used by shippers and businesses to get their goods to customers and markets. During this time, many different Railroad Companies existed, so this was no mean feat. The Rand McNally Business Atlas was updated yearly to show all railroad stops, even if no population existed, such as loading areas, storage areas, and terminals. You are looking at a 1890 Mexico Railway map from Grant’s Bankers’ and Brokers’ Railway Atlas. This map covers the whole of Mexico as it was in 1890. The map itself was the product of George Cram. A well know map publisher at the turn of the century. The atlas was created for stock speculation and brokers to show clients the routes of the early railroads. Land speculators, stock brokers, bankers and some financial big wigs were the market place A.A. Grant wanted to please with this atlas. We have heard about one earlier. An 1889 edition. This atlas or one like it, an 1890 edition, was once the property of some repository in the North Eastern part of the United States. Worldcat.org lists it, but no one knows who had it or where it is. Partie du Mexique 53.5 cm x 46.5 cm lithograph. 72 cm x 54 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Brussels, 1825 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of east-central Mexico compiled and published by the brilliant Belgian geographer Philippe Vandermaelen(1795-1869) from his monumental Atlas Universel de Geographie Physique. Politique, Statistique et Mineralogique. A work consisting of six volumes with a total of 378 map sheets drawn as globe gores on the so-called Flamsteed or modified conical projection at a unprecedented 1:1,641,836 scale- the whole of which assembles to form a globe of 7.775 meters in diameter. The map traces the Atlantic Coast from well north of Tampico to well southeast of Veracruz and extends inland to include Mexico City. Originally published in installments. The completed atlas offered no less than the largest ... morepicture of the earth's surface that had ever been recorded. Despite a sale price of 600 gold francs(~ $4000 in 2009 USD) the atlas was a commercial success. Selling hundreds of copies to subscribers ranging from the crowned heads of Europe to Alexander von Humboldt to the Pope. The income from the atlas as well as a significant inheritance enabled Vandermaelen to found the Brussels Geographic Institute along the Chaussée de Gand and Charleroi Canal(along with two adjacent and rather opulent homes for Vandermaelen and his brother) the library of which housed the only example of the giant globe ever constructed from the plates of the atlas. Employing a team of draughtsmen, lithographers and geographers Vandermaelen's Institute continued producing maps of all types throughout his life- nearly 5000 published maps in all. Discerning collectors have in recent years come to appreciate Vandermaelen's importance as a visionary geographer- a worthy follower of Mercator and Ortelius" as his biographer Eugene Gilbert de Cauwer put it- as well as the beauty and historical importance of the Atlas Universel maps. It was engraved and printed by the LL Poates Co. NY, NY. The map shows all of the territory's counties; county seat towns; major cities and many small towns& villages; rivers& streams; and topographic detail. Most of the railroads and all of the Major railroads are shown in red. Indian Reservations are also located. The map is printed on medium weight paper.
