1628 Mercator Map- Alsatia Superior Gerard Mercator is one of the two great names of early mapmaking(Abraham Ortelius being the other) Geographer. Cartographer and mathematician, he was born in Rupelmonde in 1512 and died in Duisburg, Germany in 1594 just before the publication of his great atlas in 1595. He was the first person to use the term'atlas' to describe a book of world maps and invented the famous map projection still in use today. Such was the demand for his maps that a smaller version of his atlas. Atlas Minor' was published in 1607 by Jan Jansson with maps engraved by Jodocus Hondius. This in turn went through several editions with text in different languages before Jan Jansson the younger published a new edition in 1628 with maps by Pieter van den Keere and Abraham Goos. An original antique map of northern England engraved by Joducus Hondius and published in the Mercator/Hondius/Jansson Atlas in Amsterdam in 1636. The map covers the counties of Northumberland. Cumberland and Durham(Northumbria, Cumberlandia, Dunelmensis Episcolaptus) It is mounted and framed(590x470mm in-frame) with an image area of 475x360mm. The map is double-glazed in perspex and can therefore by posted in-frame. English text on verso shows that this map is from the scarce English edition of Mercator's atlas. 1651 Fine Mercator Map of East Africa - Prester John
1628 Mercator Map- Abissinorum sive Pretiosi Joannis Imperium Gerard Mercator is one of the two great names of early mapmaking(Abraham Ortelius being the other) Geographer. Cartographer and mathematician, he was born in Rupelmonde in 1512 and died in Duisburg, Germany in 1594 just before the publication of his great atlas in 1595. He was the first person to use the term'atlas' to describe a book of world maps and invented the famous map projection still in use today. Such was the demand for his maps that a smaller version of his atlas. Atlas Minor' was published in 1607 by Jan Jansson with maps engraved by Jodocus Hondius. This in turn went through several editions with text in different languages before Jan Jansson the younger published a new edition in 1628 with maps by Pieter van den Keere and Abraham Goos. This nicely decorative ... moremap of the mythical kingdom of Prester John in east Africa comes from that Jansson edition. A Dutch one of 1651, of'Atlas Minor' Prester John was said to be a Christian patriarch and king ruling a kingdom surrounded by Muslims. Eventually the quest centred on Ethiopia which had been officially Christian since the 4th century. The map is really of the upper Nile valley, much of which is surprisingly accurate. There is an excellent title cartouche with Keere's name as the engraver. This is a necessary map for collectors of mythical cartography. The map includes a massive Taprobana(modern day Sri Lanka) in the Indian Ocean. The Indian subcontinent is severely truncated and the Indian Ocean appears to be land locked. Only the northern part of Africa is shown with the Nile originating in the twin lakes south of the Equator in the Lunae montes(Mountains of the Moon) While Mercator is perhaps best known for his modern maps and the map projection which bears his name. One of his life goals was to produce his own version of Ptolemy's Geographia. As a second installment of his Atlas sive Cosmographia. Mercator published an authentic version of Ptolemys seminal work, deliberately devoid of the distracting interpretations and misinterpretations by earlier editors intent on improving the Egyptian geographers seminal work. Mercators goal was an accurate portrait of Ptolemys second-century view of the world. This Mercator model ship is the Norway. M904. It is in very good condition except that there is a small shiny spot near the front mast. Which means it was repaired at one time. No. This isn't an actual 1620 printing- just the name of the print and the date of printing is unknown, but, I assume quite a while back.as this was acquired at an ephemera auction with other OLD paper items. My Guess that it was printed in the 1960s SIZE = 26" x 20" I know it looks yellowed. The pics were taken with inside light. It is much brighter and in Wonderful Shape- just some minor rough edges(small corner dings) and nice thick paper- would look fantastic in a frame! Although titled'The World' depicts the western hemisphere including North America, South America, Greenland and New Zealand. The exploratory routes of Cook, Bering(Bhering) Ross, Tasman, Quiros, Parry and others are noted throughout the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The region north of the Hudson Bay is tenuously mapped, reflecting numerous expeditions, including those Parry, Middleton, James, and Hudson. Parry's discovery of the New Georgia Islands and Bankes Land is noted. The eastern shore of Greenland is similarly speculative, ... morefollowing the model established by William Scoresby as far north as Gale Hawkes Land. Although the map postdates the Louisiana Purchase, it puts the western border of the United States only as far as the Mississippi River up to St. Louis, then following the Missouri River and turning south where John Jacob Astor had his fur trading post, Fort Astoria, on the Columbia River(although not identified here) Spanish dominions include Florida, Texas(which would soon declare independence in 1836) as well as what was then known as Upper California, as far north as the Columbia River. Some of the political incongruities presented here may be suggestive of British sympathies towards Spanish, rather than American interests. The Great Salt Lake in Utah is here labeled Lake Timpanogos and appears in its embryonic form. Just south of the Salt Lake we find the region of Teguayo. Teguayo was identified as one of the Kingdoms of Gold presumed to be found in the unexplored American west. The name Teguayo first appears in the'Benevides Memorial' where it is described as a kingdom of great wealth to rival Quivara, another mythical kingdom which curiously does not appear on this map. 1780 Bonne WORLD MAP Mercator Projection, Cartographic Oddities, Very Decorative
PLANISPHERE SUIVANT LA PROJECTION DE MERCATOR 32 cm x 21 cm copperplate enraving. 37.5 cm x 26.5 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, J.L. Pellet, Geneva, 1780 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the world map compiled by the French cartographer Rigobert Bonne(1727-1795) for the atlas volume that accompanied the profoundly influential Histoire philosophique et politique. Des etablissements et du commerce des europeens dans les deux Indes by(1713-1796) Bonne succeeded Bellin as Chief Royal Hydrogapher at the Depôt de la Marine in 1773 and while his principal focus was on the production of marine charts. He also published general atlases throughout his career. One of the earliest world maps to present the name of the newly established United States(which was still engaged in the Revolutionary War when the map was published) the ... moremap provides a fascinating snapshot of European knowledge of the world at the time with some rather startling misconceptions. This example exhibits hand colour work of the highest order as well as a fine uniform patina and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. Among the cartographic curiosities found on the map we see Alaska presented as an island with Greenland connected to the North American continent. The north of which is largely an unknown void. As noted the map identifies the United States(Etats-Unis) to get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Boston to the island of"Alaschka" as seen below spilling into left map border measures just 9 cm actual size: African interior almost entirely uncharted and Tasmania is shown as a peninsula to Australia: Condition- Please note carefully: Map is in very good condition as can be ascertained from photos. Dundalk, Louth, Drogheda, Armagh etc. The title is displayed within an ornate cartouche and the map is enhanced with attractive and appropriate later hand colouring. In order to add further detail some locations are identified in two numbered keys. Latin text verso. Fine condition. A crisp. Dark impression, free of repairs or restoration. Centre fold as issued. Gerard Mercator( 1512-1594) remains perhaps the most famous cartographer of them all. With the Mercator projection system that he created still in use today. He and his friend and business associate Abraham Ortelius were responsible for the first atlases ever published. Mercator himself established the concept of the modern atlas although it was Ortelius who was to make first publication. Mercator's own atlas was published in 3 parts running up to 1595, with a number of following editions. His son Rumold and grandson Michael continued Gerard's work after his death in 1594. The plates were later aquired by Hondius who acted as publisher, but continued to credit Mercator as the cartographer.
