This little antique bottle is in the image of a meerkat. It has a hand tooled top meaning that it was made before 1910. It is embossed MERCATOR ANVERS BELGIQUE DEPOSE on the lower reverse. The lower front label reads Distillerie Mercator S.A. Successeurs W Michelsoy. The back label reads Blue Curaco CORDIAL non- alcoholic certified food color 1/10 of 1% benzoate of soda cont 1 1/2 FL. 1630 Mercator Map- Anglia Gerard Mercator is one of the two great names of early mapmaking(Abraham Ortelius being the other) Geographer. Cartographer and mathematician, he was born in Rupelmonde in 1512 and died in Duisburg, Germany in 1594 just before the publication of his great atlas in 1595. He was the first person to use the term'atlas' to describe a book of world maps and invented the famous map projection still in use today. Such was the demand for his maps that a smaller version of his atlas. Atlas Minor' was published in 1607 by Jan Jansson with maps engraved by Jodocus Hondius. This in turn went through several editions with text in different languages before Jan Jansson the younger published a new edition in 1628 with maps by Pieter van den Keere and Abraham Goos. This nicely decorative map of England comes from that ... morenew edition of'Atlas Minor' In this case a German text one of 1630. Mercator gives it a rather linear, elongated look. 1628 Lovely Mercator Map of South America
1628 Mercator Map- America Meridionalis Gerard Mercator is one of the two great names of early mapmaking(Abraham Ortelius being the other) Geographer. Cartographer and mathematician, he was born in Rupelmonde in 1512 and died in Duisburg, Germany in 1594 just before the publication of his great atlas in 1595. He was the first person to use the term'atlas' to describe a book of world maps and invented the famous map projection still in use today. Such was the demand for his maps that a smaller version of his atlas. Atlas Minor' was published in 1607 by Jan Jansson with maps engraved by Jodocus Hondius. This in turn went through several editions with text in different languages before Jan Jansson the younger published a new edition in 1628 with maps by Pieter van den Keere and Abraham Goos. Mercator has changed the initial'potato' shape but it is still wider in the south than its accurate modern delineation. There is a nice cartouche title in the bottom right as well as a compass rose in the south Atlantic. Pieter van den Keere is shown as the map's engraver.
