He was orphaned at the age of fourteen when his father, an army officer, was killed at the Battle of Plasencia on June 15, 1746. Hence, Vincente was brought up by his uncle, a priest of various parishes in the province of Extramadura. Vincente Tofino entered the army in 1750. By 1755. He had reached the rank of Lieutenant, had taught himself the first fifteen books of Euclid, and had become a specialist in artillery. A subsequent appointment as Teacher of Mathematics at the Naval Academy, also in 1755, began a thirty year naval career in which he climbed to the rank of Rear Admiral. Hispaniae Novae Sivae Magnae. Recens et Vera Descriptio 50 x 35 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, Jan Baptist Vrients, engraved 1579, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map(Van der Krogt 9510:31) of"New Spain" i.e. Mexico- from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. Here Ortelius may have drawn upon a 1575 map of the region by French cartographer Jean Duran. But the principal contributor for this map is thought to be Jeronimo de Chaves(1523-1574) who succeeded Sebastian Cabot as Pilot Major and was appointed royal cosmographer at the Casa de Contratacion. Wonderfully decorative with flamboyant decorative elements, the map provides a fascinating snapshot of Spanish new world ... moreconquest in the 16th century. One of the more sought-after of Ortelius maps, this well-preserved example exhibits hand colour work of the very highest order and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. The first of two magnificent decorative cartouches features a leering horned demon. Two ferocious creatures of indeterminate species, and four"Aztec" faces: A second cartouche features new world fruits. Exotic birds and more Aztec inspired faces. Old Nautical Map in good shape. Some light mildew from storage. This and the other maps I am listing were found in the attic of a house that we were cleaning out. The other maps are stamped by the Navy Department as being from the 1940's. This map has no such stamp but appears to be of the same age. This map is labeled Cabo De Penas to Pointe D'Arcachon North Coast of Spain to West Coast of France. It measures 50" by 30" It is numbered No. 4379 and says it is from French and Spanish Surveys to 1929. It is folded in fourths and those are the only major creases. See photos.
