This map is very large. Measuring 27" x 17" 68.5cm x 43cm) This particular map is of Missouri and Kansas. Alvin Johnson began publishing maps in 1860. For the first 2 years he published maps with the attribution to Johnson& Browning. In 1862 he began to publish maps under the name Johnson& Ward. This map was produced in 1862 and is a first edition Johnson& Ward map. You can tell the early edition maps by the different boarder around the edge(which we find is much nicer than later editions) This boarder was only used until 1863. The map is original and has not been restored. The hand coloring is original to 1862. These maps are not uncommon however the earlier editions are much harder to find. We also find the earlier edition maps have a much nicer color. The color of this map is very vibrant(don't let the pictures fool you. They are very difficult to photograph and much nicer in person) There is little to no fox marks on this map. Please take a close look at the pictures to be the final judge of condition. You will get exactly what is shown. This map has not been trimmed. The map is complete. There is nothing on the reverse side. Johnson's maps have become iconic maps to hang on the walls of American homes. Professionally framed and matted there are few that compare. Description: It is an authentic Antique Map: Not a modern reproduction! It is a steel plate engraved map with original handcoloring as issued. The most sought after of all the Mitchell Maps. It is from a rare edition of Charles Desilver's New Universal Atlas. Published by Desliver in Philadelphia in 1857. The map has a copyright date by Desliver of 1856 in small print in the bottom margin. Desilver's name and address 251 Market St. Philladelphia appears under the title area. The American Cartographer, Charles Desilver, bought the copyrights and plates of Mitchell's atlas of the same name and updated the maps and made some minor changes particularly ... morein the title block, added his own border style, choices of color and published the atlas from 1856 to 1859. The run of the Desilver atlas was more limited in number than the previous Cowperthwait publishing, thus the Desilver maps are the rarest of all the Mitchell maps published and difficult to find. A copy of the title page is included. Size: The map image measures approximately 13 by 15 1/2 inches on a 13 3/4 by 17" page. Condition: The map is in Very Good condition for its age with overall tonal aging and original handcoloring as issued. Blank on the reverse, printed on a strong flexible page, not brittle, basically as seen in the pics. There is some darkening around the edges, otherwise it is very clean with a nice anttique quality that would frame up nicely. The pic is of the actual map you are bidding. Hand colored in beautiful pastels by the artisans of the time. showing all the railroads going into the frontier. all the depots along the road are named. famous and amusing names such as First View; Cheyenne Wells, Wild Horse; American Ranch; etc, etc. Most of the western sections of both states still remain unsettled by the white man. Even as of 1884 there still were problems with the roaming bands of Indians and bandits. Map is complete with all the margins. No defects, really beautiful map by Mitchell, 1884. It is from Everts The Official State Atlas of Kansas(Philadelphia: L.H. Everts& Co. 1887) apparently a very rare printing. A copy of the title page is included for authenticity. The atlas is the first to compile and show in detail the various counties, cities and towns of Kansas. The maps show much details including towns, townships, sections, quarter sections, schools, some houses and other details. On some maps there are surveryor ... moreseals, signatures and script that were printed in the plate, many of these maps were originally procured from the Kansas Survey offices and reproduced for the atlas. The maps were first printed by lithographic process and then the color washes were hand applied, often with stencil for the large fields of color. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed being sold as a double sized elephant folio sheet as seen in the pics, photographed against a dark background. There are maps and town plans on both sides as seen, so if framing one would have to choose a side to frame. Overall, a very nice rare example in very good condition for its age. Size: The entire page measures 17 1/2 by 28 inch with the map image area slightly smaller as shown in the pic with a margin all around. Condition: It is in Very Good condition for its age printed on a light buff page with a centerfold as issued. It is basically as seen in the pics. There is some wear around the edges. Bumped corners and a couple of short edge tears, otherwise it is very clean and would frame up nicely. Pics are of the actual map.
