Cartographer: Alvin Jewett Johnson(September 23. 1827- April 22, 1884) was a prolific American map publisher active from 1856 to the mid-1880s. Johnson was born into a poor family in Wallingford, Vermont where he received only a based public education. He is known to have worked as school teacher for several years before moving to Richmond, Virginia. Johnson got his first taste of the map business and a salesman and book canvasser for J. H. Colton and company. The earliest Johnson maps were published with D. Griffing Johnson(no clear relation) and date to the mid-1850s, however it was not until 1860 that the Johnson firm published its first significant work, the Johnson's New Illustrated(Steel Plate) Family Atlas. General Description: 1. Strikingly interesting and highly detailed map. Original hand coloring. The map depicts in great detail all of the geographical information known at the time the map was published. Note that many geographical details have changed since the map was published and were not accurate compared to today's modern maps because things were fully discovered and accurately mapped yet. Cartographer: Alvin Jewett Johnson(September 23. 1827- April 22, 1884) was a prolific American map publisher active from 1856 to the mid-1880s. Johnson was born into a poor family in Wallingford, Vermont where he received only a based public education. He is known to have worked as school teacher for several years before moving to Richmond, Virginia. ... moreJohnson got his first taste of the map business and a salesman and book canvasser for J. H. Colton and company. The earliest Johnson maps were published with D. Griffing Johnson(no clear relation) and date to the mid-1850s, however it was not until 1860 that the Johnson firm published its first significant work, the Johnson's New Illustrated(Steel Plate) Family Atlas. The publication of the Family Atlas followed a somewhat mysterious 1859 deal with the well-established but financially strapped J. H. Colton cartographic publishing firm. Although map historian Water Ristow speculates that Colton sold his copyrights to Johnson and his business partner, another Vermonter named Ross C. Browning(1832- 1899) a more likely theory is that Johnson and Browning financially supported the Colton firm in exchange for the right to use Colton's existing copyrighted map plates. Regardless of which scenario actually occurred it is indisputable that the first Johnson atlas maps were mostly reissues of earlier Colton maps. Map from Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas 1867/1870 - Russia
This auction is for the map of Russia from the Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World. By Prof. A.Guyot. This map is in very nice condition given its age. It is in its original unrestored condition. The colors(all hand colored) are still very vibrant and all of the map is still very readable. There is one small tear on the upper pane but this does not extend into the map itself. The seam is completely intact as shown in the close up of Moscow. There are a few stains in the border and map but I have tried to highlight them in the pictures. These maps were given to me from an estate to sell. I say this for transparency. As I will not be of much help in grading the shape of the maps. However, I will answer any question as quickly as I can. I do have the entire book(covers are in very poor condition) but it has already been split ... moreup. I will be posting a few sections at a time but they are in a pretty random order as I don't really know much about which may be more desirable. For sale is an antique map of Japan from Johnson’s New Illustrated(Steel Plate) Family Atlas. Published in 1864. These maps are some of the most colorful and accurate maps produced in the 1860's. Johnson maps are characterized by hand coloring in red and green and distinctive borders, including iron scrollwork and a Celtic design. This beautiful map of Japan includes insets of Yesso and Nagasaki. Japan at this time was passing through the declining years of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Japan's centuries of relative isolation ended with Commodore Perry's historic opening of Japan in 1854. Japan's first embassy to the United Stated followed in 1860. Culminating in the ratification of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce, which would herald a rise in western, particularly American, influence on Japanese culture and politics. Map Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas - 1867/1870 - KY TN - US
This auction is for the map of 2 American states: Kentucky and Tennessee from the Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World. By Prof. A.Guyot. This map is in its original unrestored state. The colors are still very vibrant and all of the map is still very legible. The center seam is still completely intact but has a couple of thin spots. There are a few stains but nothing out the detracts much from the map itself. I have tried to capture the most obvious flaws in the pictures. These maps were given to me from an estate to sell. I say this for transparency. As I will not be of much help in grading the shape of the maps. However, I will answer any question as quickly as I can. I do have the entire book(covers are in very poor condition) but it has already been split up. I will be posting a few sections at a time but they are in ... morea pretty random order as I don't really know much about which may be more desirable. If the postings are up at the same time, I will be happy to combine shipping. One of the pictures is the title page. Which I have included as a reference, this is not part of the map. I will ship these media mail in tubes. Other shipping methods will be done at customer request and will be paid for above the basic shipping cost. Map Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas - 1867/1870 - AR MS LA - US
This auction is for the map of 3 American states: Arkansas. Mississippi and Louisiana from the Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World, by Prof. A.Guyot. This map is in its original unrestored state. The colors are still very vibrant and all of the map is still very legible. There are several small tears in the map, especially along the outside edges. None of the tears has made it into the map. The seam itself is still completely intact but is a bit thin in a couple of places. The paper has some stains near the corners.
