Johnson, 113 Fulton St. New York, 1866. The book measures 15" x 18" with 134 numbered pages. With 105 of these being charts and hand painted maps with lovely scrolled borders. They are all in very good sound condition with spine and joints tight and board/cover solid. I have not looked at each and every page because I didn't want to take a chance of damaging the book in any way but I noticed that there are some pages with water stains, but the maps seem to be basically in very good condition. There's about 10 pages toward the front that are torn on the bottom corner(see photo) which only slightly interferes with the words/pictures. A few of the last pages are slightly torn at the bottom right corner(does not hinder the text) Some of the pages at the very edge are a bit raggedy. The front and back boards(covers) are lose from the body. The first and last pages are nicely marbleized and the bottom corners are missing. The pages are tight into the spine. 1863 JOHNSON'S NEW ILLUSTRATED FAMILY ATLAS OF THE WORLD - 97 MAPS & CHARTS!
BEAUTIFUL original 1863 Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World. Includes 97 hand colored maps and charts(calls for 99. But the last two were likely not available when this went to print, as it doesn't appear to have any missing pages, and they would have been the last two, 98& 99) There is some light water staining along the edges and one corner that seems to stop after map#22(see photos) There is uneven foxing throughout as well as edge chipping(expected in a book of this age) For some reason, the Indiana and Ohio maps were bound in the front of the book. I am guessing that since it came from an Indiana estate, here in Richmond, right at the Ohio border, that the book was made that way for this region. The book is quite large, with full page, beautiful, hand colored maps that really deserve to be matted and framed, ... morebut I will leave that decision for the new owner. The book measures approximately 18 1/2" X 14 3/4" and is a MASSIVE piece. Binding of front cover is a bit loose and the covers edges are all worn(again, as to be expected in a book of this age) This is the most complete 1863 Johnson's that I've ever seen available(97 maps and charts) The maps usually sell, individually for $100 or better. RARE* ANTIQUE 1862 MAPS of the NORTH AMERICA 150 years old HIGHLY DETAILED HAND-COLORED CIVIL WAR ERA LOOK AT THE STRANGE"DISTRICTING" OF BRITISH AMERICA(or what will become Canada several years after this) This old Civil-War-Era map features an evolving United States- pre West Virginia and rapidly shifting state and territorial borders in the West. Alaska is still a Russian Possession. Panama is still part of Columbia. But. As highlighted, the strange districting of"British America" soon-to-be Canada) is what really makes this map rare and unique. I did some quick research. Trying to find an explanation for the areas/ districts/ territories/ quasi-provinces- whatever you want to call them- and found two things: 1. J. H. Colton was a previous partner of this mapmaker. A. J. Johnson. Starting in 1855(what I've found ... moreout so far) Colton arranged"Canada" in this way. 2. I haven't found another mapmaker that depicted pre-Canada this way. 3. The names of the districts correspond fairly well to districts used by the North West Company. A fur trading business headquartered in Montreal from 1779 to 1821. Then in 1821. North West Company merged with its long-term rival, the well-known Hudson's Bay Company. The companies maintained trading posts where company managers and clerks(sometimes called proprietors) kept records of the local fur trade. It is a very rare and hard to find book because of it's age. It is a"Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World with Descriptions" It was printed in New York by Johnson and Ward at 113 Fulton Street in the year 1864. That means this atlas was printed during the Civil War years! It is filled with maps. Statistics, and information about the entire world. The atlas does have some wear but it is mostly to the exterior. The binding seems to be in good condition considering it's age. It appears to have all of it's pages without any torn out or missing. There is a tear in the picture of the map of Ohio that is pictured but that is the ... moreexception and not the norm.
