Antique Reprint Henricus Hondius 1661 Australe Stella Graphicum 20" x 18" Framed
Antique Reprint Henricus Hondius 1661 Australe Stella Graphicum 20" x 18" Framed. An absolutely lovely antique or at least vintage I believe reprint of Henricus Hondius 1661 Haemisphaeri Graphicum Coeli Tiet VM Sceno Australe Stella Terrae. There is a small tear in the border of this in the upper right area(PLEASE SEE PHOTO BELOW) The size of the chart or map(not sure of the proper term for this) is approximately 20" x 18" it is a little larger. I am measuring this by what is showing with the mat on. I bought this and another very similar one which I am also listing as these 2 would be great together as they are matted and framed the same. On the other listing I took the chart out of the frame so that I could see exactly what I had. These charts are glued to a backing and there was some pencil writing on the other chart. ... moreYou can view that other item in my listings. As these were owned by the same person and framed by the same framer I am assuming they are both of the same time period, and again, these are I believe reprint. They are still fantastic and would be wonderful in a home library or office. The wood on the frame is very heavy and I believe solid worm wood(little holes have been borned into the wood) I have not applied any oil or tried to touch up the frames, I am sure they would look much better after that is done. The wire on the back of this to hang this really should be replaced as it is so old it has become brittle and on the other print it did actually break apart, so I would restring this prior to hanging. Buyer does have the option of having the item removed from the frame and a reduced shipping fee- remember however that item is glued to a mat so the package would then be a still large 25 x 20. But thin package and of course would weigh much less. I can not give that shipping total prior to purchase however, because I would need a zip code or country and an exact weight. I am always fair with my customers. Framing company was John Nighland/ Pictures. Mirrors, Artists Materials

RARE Map of Moscovia by Mercator/ Hondius. English Edition 1625 Published: London. 1625 Size: 5.2 x 6.8 inches. 13.2 x 17.2 cm) Hand colored. In 1625 Samuel Purchas published"His Pilgrimes" which is one of the fullest and most important collections of voyages and travels in the English language. These four volumes comprised details of the major voyages of discovery and exploration to that date and were accompanied by many maps from the"Atlas Major" by Mercator-Hondius. A rare issue. Good and dark impression. With descriptive text in Elizabethan English on both sides. Size of paper: 13" x 8" 32x21cm) A note on hand coloring: The subject of the age and provenance of hand coloring when dealing with examples of incunabula and early printing is a recurrent and confusing one. At the time of the invention of printing ... moreby Gutenberg. Around 1453, all books were hand written and almost universally hand colored and decorated. Gutenberg’s first Bible was printed with the expectation that the first initials of paragraphs and the margins of the pages themselves would be hand colored with decorative and fanciful designs in the medieval style as all codices had been since the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Late medieval and Renaissance books were meant to be colored. A printing press. However, can produce black& white images far faster than colorists can color them. Many, if not most, books, therefore, were bought uncolored. In some cases these books were colored in the first few years of their existence. In many other cases they were colored by bookbinders when they were taken in for repair. A very significant number of 15 th and 16 th century books were colored in the late 17 th and early 18 th centuries when labor was particularly inexpensive. Victorians. When they weren’t mangling medieval manuscripts by cutting out the highly decorated initials and pasting them in scrapbooks, also spent time coloring old books and maps, usually in a very unattractive manner. After Jodocus Hondius II's premature death in 1629 his brother Henricus removed the four panels from the plate leaving only the central map and thus matching the size of the other folio maps published in the highly successful Mercator-Hondius Atlas. However. In 1644 the French mapmaker and engraver Nicolas Picart made a close copy of the original plate, restoring the portraits and city plans to three of the four sides of the map. This example of the map(Burden#333) is from a still-later ... moreplate engraved for the 1659 edition of Les Estats. Empires, Royaumes et Principautez du Monde by French historian and(1537-1635) and closely follows the Picart version. Unlike the well-known Blaeu map of 1617. Hondius's map and its successor variants such as this are notable for depicting town views of North America including the American Indian town of after the by colonist John White and its fascinating group of ethnic portraits include natives of Greenland. Virginia, Florida, Mexico, Peru, Brazil and Chil i. Exceptionally rare. This historically important map will make a cornerstone addition to any collection related to the early mapping of America. This well-preserved example exhibits hand colour work of the very highest order. And will make a superb presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the six town views. 1633 Le Clerc / Hondius Map of the World in Hemispheres
1633 Le Clerc/ Hondius Map of the World in Hemispheres WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Orbis Terrae Novissima Descriptio. Description: A fine 1633 example of Jodocus Hondius and Jean Le Clerc's scarce separately published map of the world. Based on Gerard Mercator's map of 1587. Jodocus Hondius was commissioned by the French publisher Le Clerc to produce this map in 1602. The map exists in three known states, this being the last and rarest, identifiable by the inclusion of the 1633 date as well as evidence(1620- 21) of the broken plate in the upper left corner. Unlike most earlier editions, there is no known Le Clerc atlas corresponding to this date. Nonetheless, extensive Latin verso text makes it clear that this was part of an atlas- perhaps an unrecorded edition. This is an early and important map, ... morepredating many of the great discoveries that would follow in the subsequent decades. Consequently it is rife with speculation and bears up to extensive study. Our survey of the map will begin in North America which remained at this time largely unexplored. Of the Hudson Bay, the Great Lakes, the Mississippi River, and the Rocky Mountains there is no trace. The St. Lawrence River is, however, clearly discernible. The legendary speculative kingdoms of Quiviara, Anian, Tolm, Cibola appear in the American west. In the northeast another legendary kingdom of gold Norombega, appears roughly where Maine is today. A large inland lake or bay opening into the northern Arctic is identified as Mare Dulce(Sweet Sea) and corresponds to Mercator's Lake Conibas. Conibas was first speculated in 1595 on Mercator's map of the northern Polar Regions, though his sources for this mysterious lake are unknown. Here the lake has been moved further south, to a position somewhat proximal to the Great Lakes, leading us to speculate that Mercator had some inkling of the Great Lakes long before their documented discovery. Nova Albion is identified in the northwestern part of America confirming English
1607 Mercator - Hondius Thematic Map of the World Showing Religions
1607 Mercator- Hondius Thematic Map of the World Showing Religions WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Designatio Orbis Christiani. Description: One of the earliest known thematic maps. This is a fine example of the 1607 Mercator- Hondius map of the World showing different religions. The world is presented on a hemispherical projection with Europe and Africa at center. Various symbols are sued to identify different religious groups including Christians(cross) Muslims(crescent) and idolaters(arrow) These reference a table in the lower right quadrant that provides references and additional detail. Cartographically this map follows the model associated with the ephemeral period between the navigations of Magellan and Drake, when it was believed that Tierra del Fuego was in fact attached to a massive Southern Continent. ... moreDrake's voyages of 1577 to 1580 proved definitively that this was not the case, but some European cartographers were slow to update their maps- the present offering being one such example. Other elements of cartographic interested include a misaligned Caspian Sea, an insular presentation of Korea, and a limited portrait of southern Java. Hondius prepared this as one of two world maps presented in the 1607 Latin first edition of the Atlas Minor, one of the better small format atlases to appear in the early 17th century. Plates for this were later sold to London booksellers who used them to illustrate some editions of Purchas His Pilgrimage. Size: Printed area measures 7 inches high by 8 inches wide.
