Title: India Orientalis By: J. Hondius Description: A very beautiful and highly distinctive copper engraved map- one of the earliest to focus on the Asian region covering the Indian peninsula. Through Burma and Thailand, to the Philippines and China and extending south to the tip of the Malaysian peninsula with parts of Borneo and Sumatra. Note the huge bay in Northern Malaysia which dissects the peninsular into two. Macao and Canton named in Southern China. Elegantly engraved with a wave-patterned sea. A galleon, a sampan, and a sea monster. Inland the dominant feature is the mythical lake of Chiamai Lacus from which five rivers flow and two other spurious lakes in Central China. Numerous place names along the coasts. Further embellished with three fine strapwork cartouches. French text on verso. Condition: Coloured in outline. Light browning ... moreand some spotting. Some marginal fraying and occasional marginal creasing. At right small tears. Still good/very good condition given the age and the brightness of the colouring. Date: 1619 Size: 4 8cm x 35 cm. Mercator's world Atlas of 1596 included 6 regional maps of England and Wales. In 1604 the map plate were bought by Jodocus Hondius who continued to issue the"Mercator"Atlas with further additional maps of his own. The business in turn passed to Jodocus' son Henry whose name is on this map. Henry issued this English text edition of the Atlas in 1636 for which new plates were engraved of the UK regional maps. Vintage Gold Foil Old World Map The Old World planisphere by Henri Hondius
I have a framed vintage gold foil old world map. Top of map says: NOVA TOTIVS TERRARVM ORBIS GEOGRAPHICA AC HYDROGRAPHICA TABVLA. Auct: Henr: Hondio. The map measures 15 x 11. The frame measures approximately 18 x 18. Gold frame has some scratches and the foil is not flat. The foil is glued to cardboard and may be difficult or impossible to restore. One of the most important 17th century maps of Chesapeaka Bay"Nova VIRGINIAE Tabula" Hondius/ Blaeu The early settlement of Jamestown is noted as Lamestowne and there are a number of other place names. Both English and Native American. The map was derived from Capt. John Smith's map of 1612, which was the first to depict the bay and tributaries with any accuracy. In the upper left corner is an engraving of the great Indian Chief, Powhatan, seated on his throne and surrounded by his subjects. A Susquehanna Chief is depicted on right under the British coat-of-arms and a key cartouche. The plate was engraved by Dirck Grijp and was originally published by Jodocus Hondius Jr. in 1618. It was purchased by Willemstad Blaeu shortly after Hondius' death(1629) and Blaeu' imprint replaced that of Hondius. Cartographer: Jan Jansson or Johannes Janssonius(1588- 1664) was born in Arnhem. Holland. He was the son of a printer and bookseller and in 1612 married into the cartographically prominent Hondius family. Following his marriage he moved to Amsterdam where he worked as a book publisher. It was not until 1616 that Jansson produced his first maps, most of which were heavily influenced by Blaeu. In the mid 1630s Jansson partnered with his brother-in-law, Henricus Hondius, to produce his important work, the eleven volume Atlas Major. About this time, Jansson's name also begins to appear on Hondius reissues of notable Mercator/Hondius atlases. Jansson's last major work was his issue of the 1646 full edition of Jansson's English Country Maps. Following Jansson's death in 1664 the company was taken over by Jansson's brother-in-law Waesberg. Nova Descriptio" Jodocus Hondius This stunning map was compiled from two of the most important source maps of the early colonial period; John White's Virginia and Jacques Le Moyne's Florida. Hondius' map became the prototype map of the region for the first half of the 17th century and continued to influence the cartography of the region until the middle of the 18th century. Largely due to the enormous success of Hondius' atlas. Le Moyne's erroneous depiction of a large inland lake(Lacus aquae dulcis) from which the R. de May(St. John's River) flows in a southeasterly direction was popularized. Chesapeake Bay, here called Chesepioock Sinus, and the area south towards C.S. Romano Hispanis are shown in their white delineations. The Indian villages of Paquiwok, Croatoan, ... moreand Wococon are named in the outer banks and several others along the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds. The map is extensively decorated with depictions of Indian villages incorporated in the title cartouche, a Floridian King and Queen and Virginian natives in a canoe taken from De Bryan, wildlife including a wild turkey, ships, sea monsters and a superb compass rose.
