After his father died in 1612 Henricus ran the business with his brother-in-law. In 1621 opened his own company in his hometown. The first time his name was mentioned in an atlas was in 1623 when he published the fifth edition of the Mercator-Hondius atlas. After 1628 Henricus partnered with the cartographer Jan Janssonius and together they continued the business.

Hamburg in the East and Diepholz in the south- by Gerard Mercator was published by Joducus Hondius in the 1628 French edition of Mercators Atlas. Jodocus Hondius(1563- 1612) One of the most notable engravers of his time, is known for his work ... morein association with many of the cartographers and publishers prominent at the end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth century. In 1604 Hondius bought the plates of Mercator's Atlas which. In spite of its excellence, had not competed successfully with the continuing demand of Abraham Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. To meet this competition Hondius added about 40 maps to Mercator's original number and from 1606 published enlarged editions in many languages. Still under Mercator's name but with his own name as publisher. These atlases have become known as the Mercator/Hondius series. The following year the maps were re-engraved in miniature form and issued as a pocket Atlas Minor. After the death of Jodocus Hondius the Elder in 1612. Work on the two atlases, folio and miniature, was carried on by his widow and sons, Jodocus II and Henricus, and eventually in conjunction with Jan Jansson in Amsterdam. In all, from 1606 onwards, nearly 50 editions with increasing numbers of maps with texts in the main European languages were printed. Map: Jodocus Hondius Jr. “Africae Nova Tabula”, Amsterdam 1619
Part of a four map set of the continents prepared by Jodocus Hondius Jr. 1593-1629) in 1619. This particular map is variant A of the first state of the map of 1619. In this variant there are no decorative borders. But in every other way it is the same as the rare first state. For this variant the borders were masked during the printing process. It did not appear in a regular atlas and was without text. The geography for this map was copied from Willem Blaeu’s map of 1617. The map is better known in its more numerous third. Fourth, and fifth states with imprints of Henricus Hondius or Jannsonnius and this first state variant is quite scarce. Period hand colored. Jodocus Hondius Desk/shelf Terrestrial Old World Globe This Hondius World Globe is very skillfully made. The globe measures 4" in diameter. The beautiful rich wood base measures overall 5 inches in width and is 5" inches tall. This Jodocus Hondius Globe is made of printed gores(specially shaped map sections) modeled after the actual 16th Century orginal cartographers globe. The gores are cut and applied by hand on papier-mache globe spheres. The globe is meticulously handcrafted using the complicated. There are some uneven panels as a result of the hands fading. This terrestrial globe is a design from a globe by the dutch cartographer(map maker) Jodocus Hondius. Germania 55.5 cm x 45.5 cm copperplate engraving. 57 cm x 47 cm sheet size, contemporary hand colour, Amsterdam, engraved 1625, printed 1630 We are pleased to offer this extremely scarce and wonderfully decorative panelled carte à figures map of Germany and surrounding regions(Schilder VI 37.2) compiled and published by Jodocus Hondius Jr. 1594-1629) in 1625. After Hondius's premature death in 1629. His widow sold his map plates to various publishers(including the arch-competitor Blaeu family which did not endear her to the Hondius clan) and in this case the plate was purchased by the Amsterdam publisher Everard Cloppenburgh who reissued it in this imprint in 1630, altering the plate only to replace Hondius's name with his own. The plate later came into the possession of Frederik De Wit who reissued imprints from it in the 1660s. ... moreA classic map from the Golden Age of Dutch cartography, the map presents eighteen remarkably detailed small town views with armorial escutcheons interspersed with six costumed figures while the upper panel presents equestrian portraits of the Holy Roman Emperor and the Seven Electors of the Empire. Stretching from the Baltic to the Adriatic and from Holland to Hungary and Poland, the map is densely engraved with ~ 250 placenames and features a fine title cartouche with putti celebrating a new vintage. While this example with fine hand colour work is not in absolutely perfect condition(see condition description below) the overall visual impression of the map is most impressive and it will certainly make a most elegant presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the charming title cartouche and mileage scale. With the putti enjoying the fruits of Bacchus beneath ornate calligraphy and raising a goblet high. Korea, Japan and surrounding regions(Cortazzi pl.29) published by the renowned British historian and geographer(1542-1629) for his pioneering world atlas. The cartography is based on the 1606 map of China compiled by(1563-1612) who in fact supervised the engraving of most of the map plates for Speed's earlier atlas Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine. Hondius/Mercator c1635 The original map from the 1607 copperplate engraved by Jodocus Hondius(1563-1612) A native of Flanders who at an early age was apprenticed as a globe maker and map engraver. Ultimately, Hondius became one of the foremost engravers of his time. In 1604, Hondius purchased the engraved plates of Mercator’s Atlas. Many of the maps had been drawn by the highly esteemed Dutch cartographer Gerard Mercator(1512-1594) whose contribution to the history of map-making was immense. It is Mercator who first used the term“Atlas” the word was chosen. Engraved area measures approx 47.5x37cm on an untrimmed sheet 62.5x51.5cm approx. Vertical centrefold as issued; remnants of binding material along centrefold on verso so originally published in an atlas. Verso blank(no text) I don’t know the edition but believe it be to seventeenth century. Hand colouring– outline around county boundaries and the title cartouche. In terms of condition a little sad! It’s a good strong impression and remains dark and clear; everything present with no rubbed areas even along the centrefold. Colouring faded. Paper feels fragile. Quite a lot of spotting on the image. Mainly light brown but some darker spots. Toned fairly evenly on the image. In the borders though much more noticeably and ... moreunevenly browned. And the spotting more apparent. A lot of edge damage, mainly tears and small chips with a couple of ugly tears in the bottom border with some loss of slivers of paper. Tear repaired along left side. Westphalia cum Diocesi Bremensi This small map centers roughly on Bremen and shows the waterways of northern Germany in careful detail. The map reaches from Emden in the west to the Elbe River in the east. It is adorned with a strapwork title cartouche and scale of miles. German text on verso. In 1607 Jodocus Hondius published a reduced size version of Mercator's"Atlas" Itself suitably titled"Atlas Minor" The maps were copied from those of the great cartographer Mercator of around 1580-90 or were reductions of Hondius' own maps of 1606.
