The map is incredibly detailed with historical text on British and French claims in North America as well as cartographical details on cities, towns, rivers, Indian settlements and many other features. Cartographically the map shows both the British and French possessions but from the British perspective. The map is based on the cartography of both J B D' Anville& Thomas Jefferys' Using the latters map of 1755 for the political boundaries. Some of the interesting features include. A truncated Pennsylvania and oversized Virginia, as well as the massive stretch of land in North Carolina designated Earl Granville's property, which extends to the Mississippi. Hiberniae Regnum 56.5 cm x 48 cm copperplate engraving. 60 cm x 51 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Nuremberg, circa 1710 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the classic map of Ireland published by the renowned Johann Baptist Homann(1663-1724) This first state of the plate was issued prior to Homann's appointment as Royal Geographer in 1715. A somewhat ironic title as although he was unsurpassed as a master engraver Homann was not really a true cartographer and his maps were typically close copies of earlier maps which he reworked with a distinctively bold engraving style, vivid hand colour, along with flamboyant cartouches and vignettes as is the case here. This elegantly composed map is a case in point- the cartography is a close copy of Nicolas Visscher's 1689 map which in turn was based on a map of Ireland by none ... moreother than(1623-1687) as part of a survey commissioned by Oliver Cromwell in the 1650s. As a very early imprint from the plate(later printings added Homann's publishing privilege and Imperial appointment to the title cartouche) this is a strong and dark impression that will make a fine presentation if matted and framed. The large title cartouche presents"The harp that once through Tara's halls/ the soul of music shed" with assorted putti while Pan plays his flute at upper left. This color-printed paper map measures approximately 29.5 cm. by 35.2 cm. the image. That is– the paper measures approx. 32.3 cm. by 38.0 cm. Online I found an example of this map that had sold in a Robert Deutsch auction(Auction#43. Lot#442– no date of sale that I could find) for $218, and the seller gave the date of it at 1745. Apparently Homann Erben(Heredibus Homannianis” on this map) was only in business until 1748, so it can’t be any later than that. Condition– nice supple paper with fresh. Bright colors; six marks/residue on back(and somewhat in the margins on front) from the six pieces of paper tape that were holding it to a mat; full-height fold/crease about 4 cm. in from the RH edge of the paper(I presume this was once“taped in” in a bound volume. And that the line might be perhaps be where the edge of the paper“tape” was on the ... morebackside, thus where the page would have folded when turned… the paper appears to be a little bit thin on the back in a few places next to the fold, mostly toward the bottom end of it; wee bit of paper loss from the surface of the front above and to the left of“Tab. in the logo at UL– see close-up scan.
