Mercator's calculations and map designs redefined the 16th century concept of cartography and were the first to break away from the Ptolemy model. Many of his systems of measurement. Such as the Mercator Projection, are still in use today. Despite his prominence as a cartographer, he started his career as a crafter of scientific instruments. He did not construct his first map until 1540, when he made two maps, one of Flanders and another of Palestine. These two impressive works earned him the patronage of the Emperor Charles V, for whom he construed a globe and several large scale maps. Despite this imperial patronage, Mercator was accused of heresy and in 1552 fled to Duisburg. In Duisburg he set himself up as a cartographer and began work on his revised edition of Ptolemy's Geographia. This three volume work was the first book to be called an"Atlas" after the Titan and King of Mauritania. Following Mercator's death his descendants took over his firm but languished because of heavy competition from the Ortelius firm. Nürnberg, circa 1720-1751 We are pleased to offer a rather unusual find- a collection of original map cartouches cut from maps issued by the firm of Homann Erben(Heirs) The leading German map publisher of the 18th century. Founded by the Imperial Geographer Johann Baptist Homann(1663-1724) in 1702 and later managed by his descendants and the noted astronomer. Mathematician and geographer(1723-1762) Homann maps of this period were arguably the finest atlas maps then in production. Why someone would have preserved only the cartouches and not the maps can never be answered. But presumably the majority of the map was missing or in unsalvageable derelict condition. And while some of these cartouches themselves are in very poor condition, as a whole the collection presents ... morea fascinating overview of the superb engraving work that Homann and his successors brought to the art of the cartographic cartouche. The cartouches would certainly make a truly unique collage that would have intriguing visual impact, but will also make an important addition to any collection related to Homann maps and the flamboyant iconography of their finely engraved cartouches.
