Which was considered part of the"West India Islands" for purposes of Thompson's New General Atlas, 1817, for which this engraving was made. I also have a map of the"West India Islands, including Curacao, Grenada, Trinadad and Tobago from the same period if you are interested. This nearly 200 year old map is in fairly good condition; however, as you can see, it does have some toning and soiling and has been separated from the other half of the page, which would have included a map of Barbados. 1679 Duval Map of the West Indies, Caribbean
1679 Du Val Map-Insulae Antiiles Pierre Du Val was a nephew and pupil of the greatest of all French cartographers. Nicolas Sanson, and went on to become the Royal Geographer. He published many atlases in all sizes but one of his great achievements was the two volume'Geographie Universelle' first published in 1660, these charming little maps are very distinctive. This very nice map of the West Indies comes from a 1679 edition of that atlas. The map covers the whole of the Caribbean from southern Florida through the Bahamas. Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico and both the Windward and Leeward Isles. There is a simple title at the top right the map. The map measures 4" by 5" with a centrefold(as issued) Has wash hand colouring and is in very good condition. The map is guaranteed to be over 330 years old. Drawn by Ortelius himself. The elegant design and fine engraving work combine for what is arguably the most aesthetically pleasing composite maps of the entire Theatrum. Antique Map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America(including North and South America. And the West Indies) the scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements in addition to the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of the page is an impressive 18.5" x 16" The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show political boundaries. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the time of publication 157 years ago. This map includes Cuba. The Greater and Lesser Antilles, Windward and Leeward Islands, Caribbee Isles, ... moreJamaica, St. Domingo, Porto[Puerto] Rico, the Caymans, and portions of Florida, Central and South America, along with inset maps of Bermuda and Havana. Condition is very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around the edges, otherwise the map is very clean. It's not as dark as the photo would suggest.
