A nicely detailed map or plat of a property located in Boston. Suffolk County, Massachusetts, dated 1843. The property relates to a"Mrs. King" and her dower rights following her husband's death. The map shows the widow's dwelling house, a neighboring house, plus a"low house. Josiah Ayres, John Sullivan, and the City of Boston own the land surrounding here, while her house faces"Cross Street. This is aduplicate of an original that dated to 1831. Nice piece, measures 8.25 x 15 inches, condition is good, fold marks, is whiter in person than the photo shows.

This very uncommon map was compiled by George Washington Boynton for the Boston publisher Nathaniel Dearborn. Presented with an unusual westward orientation. This map covers early 19th century Boston and the surrounding cities of South Boston, East Boston, and Charlestown with parts of adjacent Cambridge, Roxbury, and Chelsea. When this map was drawn the Mill Dam had been completed, but Back Bay landfill and other reclamation projects of the mid-19th century were not yet planned. The map identifies rail lines(complete with tiny engraved trains) some property owners, businesses, and important buildings. A reference table at bottom center ... moredetails government buildings, churches, and public houses. This map appeared in many issues through the late 1950s, this being the first and scarcest edition. It is noteworthy that this is a separately issued map. It was never folded or bound into a book of any kind, so it is exceptional to discover an example that has been so preserved. Later issues appear folded and printed on very thin onion skin paper. The earliest editions were printed via steel plate, but sometime in the early 1840s, the printing was transitioned to lithographic stones which were used and revised until the final issues in the 1850s. Size: Printed area measures 19 inches high by 16.5 inches wide. Condition: Good. Professional restoration of several closed tears. One large and extending from lower margin into lower left title area, and a second smaller tear extending from top edge of paper to printed border of map. Other repaired tears extremely minor. A. Williams & Co's. Map of Country around Boston 1878 or before
This is a map of the area around Boston. It is contained within a small green hard cover book which is 5 1/2 by 4 inches in size. The inside has an inscription on both the book and the exterior part of the map in pencil. On the inside cover it says Katie B. Park 23 Laurel St. Somerville MA. On the exterior of the map itself there is a name that is difficult to read as there is a line drawn through it. One possibility is Harnott T Ward but it could easily be something else. Underneath that name is Registry Office. 1878. There is a line through it as well. Under that is the name Katie B.Park again inscribed in pencil. Katie's handwriting looks as if she could be a child. The map is in color as you can see from the pictures. There is an interesting reference below the distance scale of"Horse Railroads" It is 26 inches by 17 3/4 ... moreinches and it encompasses the following towns around Boston. To the north it goes as far as a piece of Swampscott. Lynn, Saugus, Melrose, Winchester, and Lexington. To the south it extends from Cohassett to Hingham Center, t No. Weymouth, West Quincy, Milton and Dedham. To the West it includes a portion of Lexington to the far northwest to Waltham, Newton, Needham Plains to the southwest, and all points in between. If you have questions please let me know and I will answer to the best of my ability. As to condition: There are a couple of"teas stains" in a fold or two. And understandably there are a couple of very small"tears" on the points of a fold(see pictures) and one tear on the western edge of the map(see picture) Over all it is in pretty good condition considering. No repairs have been attempted. Needs to be in a place where it can be conserved and loved. I have other pictures if you are interested. Sold as is. Shipped within the US only.

The plan shows some 566 housing lots, hotel sites, and parks, all on a peninsula at the outlet of the Kennebunk River and blessed with stellar views of the Atlantic. Text at the lower right extolls the areas accessibility and its scenic, recreational and other benefits. The whole is adorned by four pictorial vignettes, three of(real or idealized) vacation cottages and one of a steamer, perhaps inbound from Boston. The Sea Shore Company’s grand vision seems to have been largely unrealized, as the only element of the original plan visible on a modern map is Ocean Avenue paralleling the coastline.
