Almost two feet wide(measuring approximately 22 by 16 inches, including margins) and extremely well engraved. This is an incredibly detailed map and it is the precision with which this map was engraved that makes it great. Filled with details which it is virtually impossible to adequately represent in a scan. There are literally thousands of engraved features in this map- hundreds and hundreds of buildings delineated in tiny detail- bridges- churches- and the harbor and waterways are full of ships and boats, perhaps 100 of them represented in painstaking detail. Very prominent in this map is the"burned district, the approximately ... more65 acres of the city that were destroyed by the"Great Boston Fire of 1872, which had occurred less than a month before this map was made. This is a fantastic piece of historical memorabilia. Not just an artifact of the City of Boston of almost a century and a half ago, but also a stark reminder of the damage done by the greatest fire in that city's history. This is an extremely detailed map, a piece of Boston and Massachusetts history, and a striking antique for display. The cause of the Great Boston Fire is unknown. But it was not entirely unexpected. The city's fire chief had for years pleaded for the installation of a new fire hydrant system. And when Chicago burned in 1871, the city of Boston sent its fire chief there to observe, and his report indicated that Boston was open to the same type of calamity. It was produced using a process called cerography where a wax engraving plate was used to imprint the paper. After which, the map was hand colored. Details include: large and small mountain ranges. Mountain peaks, rivers, creeks, lakes, cities, towns and upon close examination what appears to be railroad lines. Carefully removed from an 1875 atlas. There is mild age toning, smudging and minor staining in margins. Small amount of paper loss in lower margin. Map protrudes into the margins. This is an incredibly detailed map and it is the precision with which this map was engraved that makes it great. 2001 AAA City Map of Boston(r9) This map is a great time capsule of the changes that have occurred over the last 13 years. Please be aware that these Road Maps are anywhere from 10 to 90 years old. They are printed on paper that is not acid free and in most cases have not been stored in the best way. So some of the maps you are buying may be in a condition that reflects both of these facts. The map you get may be worn or lightly torn along the fold lines due to the acidity of the paper and being folded for years. They may also be discolored or mottling spots again due to the acidity of the paper. The borders and fold lines of the maps may also have tears. On occasion maps may smell musty from the way they have been stored in the past. When the map is kept in an open area the musty smell will fade away in time. Vintage Boston. Massachusetts Union Jack Club Map Map measures about 16.75 inches long. It has been folded many times and has some small holes and tears along the creases. There is not much information available about the Boston Union Jack Club. It was located at 118 Milk Street in the financial district of Boston. The orange line stop at State used to be called Milk Street Station which the map refers to. It was no longer called Milk Street Station after 1967 so the map is at least that old. Fantastic travel memorabilia from Boston's famous United States Hotel. Dating from circa 1894 to 1905. This is the little booklet produced by the hotel. Entitled"What to See of Historic Interest in Boston and Suburbs" and includes an intact and complete fold out map denoted as"Map of the Retail Shopping District" Executed for the United States Hotel. Beach, Lincoln, and Kingston Streets. Tilly Haynes, Proprieter, Jas. G. Hickey, Manager. From website: LIfe and Times of Actress EJ Phillips" One of the oldest of these. Then modern, hostelries is the United States Hotel at Beach and Lincoln Streets. It was built in 1824. When it was regarded as an enormous structure, and certainly the largest hotel in the city. It has been enlarged several times until it covers two acres. In its early days it was the favorite stopping ... moreplace for celebrities visiting The Hub. Nineteenth Century Hotels in the United States, Antiques Digest, orig. published 1927 King's Dictionary of Boston(1883) says the United States Hotel is"one of the oldest of the established hotels of the city. And one of the best, enjoying an excellent reputation in every respect. Its seal dates back to 1826" It was on Beach Street, between Lincoln and Kingston, in the Leather District on the edge of what is now Chinatown. In 1883 it took up the entire block and was three[or four] stories high. Daniel Webster lived there at one time, and Charles Sumner entertained Dickens there. US Hotel. 1886 Tilly Haynes was the proprietor of the United States Hotel. S[he] drew both maps. The larger map is titled"New map of Boston giving all points of interest. The second. Somewhat smaller map is"Bird's eye view of Boston Harbor. The maps and the brochure accompanying have many ads for the U.S. Hotel, which ties in to the fact that they were drawn by the"Resident proprietor" of the Hotel. The maps are very well done. It was produced using a process called cerography where a wax engraving plate was used to imprint the paper. After which, the map was hand colored. Details include: large and small mountain ranges, mountain peaks, rivers, creeks, lakes, cities, towns and upon close examination what appears to be railroad lines. T here is mild age toning. Smudging and minor staining in margins. Small amount of paper loss in lower margin and m ap protrudes beyond margins borders.
