1652 Blaeu View of New Amsterdam (the earliest obtainable view of New York City)
1652 Blaeu View of New Amsterdam(the earliest obtainable view of New York City) WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Nieuw Amsterdam op t Eylant Manhattans. Description: A remarkable discovery. This is the second earliest published, and the earliest obtainable, view of New York City(the earliest being Joost Hartgers unobtainable view of 1651) Issued around 1653 by the Dutch cartographer Joannes Blaeu, this view details the southern tip of Manhattan, then New Amsterdam(Nieuw Amsterdam) as it appeared under the Dutch colonial government. There is some debate regarding the date of the original rendering of this view but most use the building on the far left, which if correctly identified was built around April of 1652, and the pronounced lack of New Amsterdam's walls which were built in 1653, to date the sketch. There ... moreis also some debate regarding the image's original author. Although Stokes refutes this, our research suggests it is most likely derived from a watercolor illustration of New Amsterdam(New York) discovered in the Albertina Collection of Vienna in 1991. The Albertina watercolor is probably the work of Augustin Herman(c. 1621– 1686) a cartographer and illustrator of Bohemian descent who settled in New York(New Amsterdam) in the 1640s. Blaeu engraved and published the view independently as Nieuw Amsterdam op t eyland Manhatttans around 1653– which corresponds to this example. Later it was adopted by another Dutch cartographer, Nicholas Visscher, who used it to illustrate his influential 1655 map of the Middle Atlantic and New england entitled Novi Belgii. Despite lacking in significant cartographic innovation, Novi Belgii is an enormously significant map for its widespread popularization of Blaeu's historic view. To this day Nieuw Amsterdam op t eyland Manhatttans is commonly, if somewhat erroneously, referred to as the'Visscher View' This is an all but unobtainable view and a once in a lifetime opportunity for the serious Manhattan collector. Cartographer: The Amsterdam based Blaeu clan represents the single most important family in the history of cartography. The firm was founded in 1596 by Willem Janzoon Blaeu(1571-1638) It was in this initial period. From 1596 to 1672, under the leadership of the Willem Blaeu and with this assistance of his two ... moretalented sons Cornelius(1616-1648) and Johannis(1596-1673) that the firm was most active. Their greatest cartographic achievement was the publication of the magnificent multi-volume Atlas Major. To this day, the Atlas Major represents one of the finest moments in cartography. The vast scope, staggering attention to detail, historical importance, and unparalleled beauty of this great work redefined the field of cartography in ways that have endured well into to the modern era. The cartographic works of the Blaeu firm are the crowning glory of the Dutch Golden Age of Cartography. The firm shut down in 1672 when their offices were destroyed during the Great Amsterdam Fire. The fire also destroyed all of Blaeu's original printing plates and records, an incomparable loss to the history of cartography. Willem Janszoon Blaeu Original copperplate printed map 1621- 1630
Willem Jenszon.Or Willem Jansz Blaue( 1571-1638) as he is more commonly know, was one of the most noted Dutch cartographers and map publisher of the 17th century. R.V.Tooley stated that Blaeu's maps are"esteemed by collectors for their decorative quilty, historical importance, and as the highest expression of Dutch cartographic art during the period of its supremacy" This map is in its third state. The first state of 1617 has the name Willem Jansz(not Blaeu) in the title cartouche. This map is vertualy imposible to aquire and is vary rare. This map that I have is the second state of(1621-1630) has the name changed to"Guijelmo Blaeum" in the title. This map is Fine condition. Clean, strong image with attractive original color. No paper separation, with complete un-trimmed margins.
1640 BLAEU Map NORTH POLAR REGIONS Important Charting of New World Exploration
Regiones Sub Polo Arctico 53 cm x 41 cm copperplate engravings. 58 cm x 46.5 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Amsterdam, engraved circa 1636, printed 1640 We are pleased to offer this exceptional original map of the northern polar regions(Van der Krogt 0020.2) compiled by(1571-1638) who with his son(1599-1673) together established in Amsterdam the foremost cartographic firm of the 17th century. T his much sought-after map features a maze of rhumb lines radiating from eight compass roses. Four of which are located equidistantally on the Arctic Circle with their fleur-de-lys pointers aimed at the centrally located North Pole. This is the rare first state of the map with this example published for the 1640 Latin edition of the Blaeu Atlas Novus. Widely considered one of the most elegant map designs of the 17th century and historically important ... morewith regard to the exploration of the New World north. The genesis of the map has been subject to some confusion. An essentially identical plate was issued by the publisher Jan Jansson in 1637 who was by then the chief competitor of the Blaeu family, while this map was not published in a Blaeu atlas until the 1638 Dutch and French editions. Unfortunately this led Philip Burden in his The Mapping of North America to imply that Blaeu copied the Jansson map and this canard has been widely repeated in other references and auction descriptions. We believe this to be a mistaken reversal of authorship and that Jansson. Who was not really a cartographer at all but certainly a talented engraver and shrewd publisher, in fact copied Blaeu's work as he had done many times before. We have encountered an example of this state of the Blaeu map with no text on verso and no centrefold suggesting that the map was engraved and printed prior to its inclusion in the 1638 atlases and available as a stand-alone publication. As we also see here the Blaeu version of the map states"Auctore Guiljelmo Blaeu" in the title cartouche, and Blaeu was often(but not always) scrupulous about c

Come ne trovate in gran numero su e-bay a prezzi irrisori. Originali moderni interamente stampati e dipinti a mano.
