One of the finest and most famous world maps to appear during the Golden Age of Dutch cartography. The map's rectangular shape and regular grid of latitude and longitude lines reflect Blaeu's used Gerard Mercator's projection which Mercator first introduced in 1569. Blaeu's map ... moreis essentially a reduced size version of his wall map of 1605. With basically identical geographical information. As is characteristic of the Mercator projection, the sizes and shapes of land masses in the polar regions are greatly exaggerated. The map is now famous for its elaborate ornamentation, embellished with ships, sea monsters, compass roses, and ornate border panels. Across the top are allegorical representations of the sun and moon and the five known planets- Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. The four basic elements, Fire, Air, Water, and Land, are illustrated on the left panel, while the four seasons are depicted on the right panel. The seven wonders of the ancient world are displayed in the bottom panels. The map incorporates some of the classic early 17th Century cartographic misconceptions. Including the elongated NW Coast of America, massive southern hemisphere with narrow strait between it and South America, incomplete New Guinea attached to large southern continent, etc. Writing is all in Latin. Condition- some age discoloration& foxing. Pin holes in the corners, small tears along some edges, two grease or oil type stains along the top edge. See pho

1648 Atlas Blaeu Title Page Antique Old Book Print Map Engraving Genuine
A Title Page from an Atlas by Joan Blaeu. His"Theatrum Orbis Terrarum sive Atlas Novus" which was first issued in 1635. This example is from the 1648 volume IV, which contained the detailed maps of England and Wales. Therefore the central figure is Britannus, and the surrounding smaller figures invaders etc. Top left is Romanus, top right, Saxo, bottom left, Danus, and bottom right Normannus. All reminiscent of the title page of Speed's 1610 Atlas. Blaeus workmanship is considered second to none. And these Atlases date from the Golden Age of Mapmaking in Holland. Great care was lavished on these title pages, and this is evident here in the superb handcolouring, not least the use of gold which reflects the light. I hope my photos go some way to conveying this quality. This example is a proof copy, with no details in the central ... morebox, so the printed impression is particularly strong. The sheet measures 46cms x 28cms approx. And the image is 41cms x 24cms. Condition:In very good condition. Slightly browned but only as much as one would expect. The handcolouring is superb and strong. Examples similar to this one can be found for upwards of £400 in the big mapshops. I am starting this auction at the ludicrous price of 0.99p with no reserve. But I expect it to rise to a value befitting so impressive an engraving. Postage is free worldwide. I am selling another Title page this week. By Jansson. Please see my other items.

A Susquehanna Chief is depicted on right under the British coat-of-arms and a key cartouche. The plate was engraved by Dirck Grijp and was originally published by Jodocus Hondius Jr. in 1618.
