1838 SDUK: Map of Eastern Siberia, Kamchatka, bit of Alaska
Fine. Original, steel-engraved map of Eastern Siberia, Kamchatka, bit of Alaska, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. Finely engraved, and carefully researched, the maps set a standard of excellence for commercial map-makers in England for decades to come. An ORIGINAL antique color map of ALASKA from McNally's Atlas. 1895. The coastline of Alaska had been known for over 100 years at this time and the map shows this in great detail. However the interior was just then being explored in detail. The Klondike and Alaska Gold Rushes were in full swing at the time and the river valleys were well mapped. The Alaska Mountains are labeled but very poorly defined with no suggestion of Denali at the time. In addition there is only a hint of mountains where the Brooks Range is. The map measures 11 by 14 inches and an index in the margin lists the population by white. Mixed, Indian, Mongolian, Eskimo, Thlinket, Athabaskan, Aleut, Tsimpsean, and Hyda. The populations of the 7 districts are listed along with Chief Cities(the 3 largest only have a population of 1000 each. Date 1895 is printed along the ... morelower margin.
