Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut on March 20, 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is know about his early schooling, it is know that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830, which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchells first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finleys New American Atlas in 1831. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. While the map content in Mitchells edition of the New American Atlas are same as Finleys edition, each map has been significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. This is a single-sided. Approximately 8.5" x 14.5" open/unfolded) approximately 8.5" x 9" folded) pilot's flight map from when he was stationed in Alaska for the Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage sometime during the 1940's- 1950's(the map is undated) This map appears to depict the safe altitude and visual landmarks for four possible landing approaches seen in the top half above the fold, and the flight details for the Range Station Approach below the fold. I really can't say, as I'm not a pilot, but in light of how this map is laid out and folded for display, I get the sense that this map may have been used in flight, and may have possibly been created to be inserted into some type of"pocket" to be displayed during flight. On the reverse side is a reminent of stickers and a couple of minor repairs. On the map side there is a rectangular acid burn from an insert as seen in the pic, some sloppy red pigment in the West Indies area and some smudges and wear around the edges as seen, although the paper is not brittle, see the pics for more on the condition. This is a single-sided. Quad-fold, approximately 16" x 21.5" open/unfolded) map dated February 24, 1948 from when this pilot was stationed in Alaska sometime during the late-1940's-50's. This map is titled, Search and Rescue Plan for Local Flights only- Adak, Alaska" This map came from the collection of a gentleman who worked his way from a cadet to his time as a fighter pilot during 22-years in the United States Air Force. He later went on to work for the space and aircraft contractor. Boeing, during the 1960's for NASA at the Jet Propulsion Lab, and then tansitioned from contracting work to employment at the Jet Propulsion Lab up through the 1980's, spending overall 22-years with JPL. I have approximately 35 or more items from this gentleman's collection up in separate auctions this week, incuding USAF ... morememos, books, flight related paperwork and maps; a couple sports related books; and some other COOL miscellaneous items, so please make sure you check them all out. Boeing, during the 1960's for NASA at the Jet Propulsion Lab, and then tansitioned from contracting work to employment at the Jet Propulsion Lab up through the 1980's, spending overall 22-years with JPL. Thanks for looking. you are bidding on a one of a kind antique map. This map was hand drawn on birch tree bark with ink and quill. This map is very unique and very detailed to the point of the water level being one layer of bark cut out to be lower than the land. A couple of other unique features is the spelling of Pacific Ocean and were the tree branch was in the bark being used to indicate a mountain. see photos) I obtained this map from an elderly gentleman who said he was remodeling a basement in North Seattle in 1985 and when they pulled back the chicken wire in an old wall. Most of the really interesting cartography here involves Buache de Neuville's reinterpretation of the apocryphal De Fonte discoveries. The De Fonte legend first appeared in a 1706 English publication entitled Memoirs of the Curious. This is an original fold out map, it looks hand colored, and it was removed from a book, as you can see where it was attached on the one edge. This could be from his book, The Seal Islands of Alaska.
