This is a vintage copper oil lamp filler by Sternau& Co. From the early 1900s. This was also used to fill the burners under the old Sternau coffee makers and chafing dishes. It stands about 4.25" from the base to the top of the center finial, 5.75" from the base to the top of the spout, is 4-1/8" in diameter at the center of the rounded container. This has the original patina and I decided to leave it that way rather than polish it, as some people prefer this aged copper appearance. I'm not sure if this is solid copper or plated, but for sure the handle and the little bridge between the container and the spout is copper plated, as what appears to be brass shows through on this area. This has a swirly handle and a long, thin, curvy spout that has a tip cover that is attached by a chain. At the upper end of the handle is a round knob-like pump that can be pushed in and out and seems to have a nice spring action. The finial cover unscrews at the top of the oil can. There is patina over all of the surface and some verdigris and darker patches that can be seen in the photos. There is one ding in the surface of the body on the right center area when the spout is pointing toward the left as in the first photo. The base of the oil can is stamped with the Sternau& Co logo(S&Co) surrounded by a circle with the words Trade Mark and Patented around the logo. Someone had scratched in the initials MA on the bottom of the oil can near the logo. Please see photos to best determine condition and feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions! This is an antique globe lantern with globe red glass. The fuel canister unscrews from the bottom. The internal parts appear to be complete. All parts fit together perfectly. The beautiful red glass that appears to be hand blown reads"Perkins 10" Frederick Perkins founded the Perkins Marine Lamp Company in the late 1800's in Brooklyn. Auction is for an Old Japanese Copper Kerosene Lamp. These were used along time ago by Japenses fishermen on their boats. The lamp measures 8" across and 5 1/2" in height. Antique 1869 Scottish Clipper Ship Brass Nautical Lantern Kerosene/Oil Lamp-1255-Dumbarton Scotland I just purchased this nice antique piece at a local estate auction. It is is very good condition considering its age! It has a very nice patina to it and all of the glass is still intact. It also has all of the reflector plates on the inside lid. This is important because there are reproductions out there and they do not have the reflector plates. Reproductions also don't have the lead flaps at the tops of the glass panels to hold the glass in. The other thing to look for is the data plate. Reproductions are usually thin and cheesy looking. This lamp has the nice thick data plate. I did my research before buying this at the auction and am 100% confident that this is an original. In fact there is still some soot in the corners of the reflector ... moreplates to indicate that it was used. Measurements are 24" tall and 14" across. Vintage ship's starboard lantern in a unique tri-plex shape. One of the largest I've seen at 21" from base to finial. 11" x 11" square with the typical curved front. Thick blue glass(not an interchangeable light filter) with horizontal grooves. Brass trim and a brass finial with hanging ring. Great"keyhole" vent holes throughout. Suffers from an untidy paint job and is in need of some updating. Missing original kerosene lamp and has been converted with a light socket. Needs new electrical cord. Brass has a lovely patina and there is still some vintage kerosene soot on the inside of this lamp. There is a small spot on the bottom by a switch of some sort that corrosion has eaten through the metal. But it's repairable and not endemic to the rest of the lantern. Glass is free of cracks or chips.

Very heavy– especially the base– old brass kerosene lamp. 8 ½” tall, 3 ½” across the base. It will stand alone, but is fitted with substantial pegs high on two sides that fit into angled slots of a wall-mounted bracket, and would presumably remain upright in an ocean swell. How far it would swing would of course depend on the height of the chimney. The wick is clean; the mechanism works smoothly; the dome at the top is signed with a‘T’ over‘M’ The surface has darkened fairly uniformly. Very good condition. There are a couple of dents, fortunately, given the dark color of the surface, not very visible. The more obvious one is a linear 1” dimple. No cracks, corrosion, scratches, or repair.
