RARE Antique New England Whale Oil Ship's Lamp With Blue Fresnel Lens
This beautiful ships lamp measures approximately 16in.x9in. and was found in a seaside barn in Massachusetts. The lamp has a heavy blue/green fresnel lens in two pieces joined by some type of fiber caulking. The body and lens cage are made from a heavy metal and are painted aqua-green. There are a couple of chips in the seam of the lens but is otherwise fine. The overall condition is fair with some rust and pitting that could be cleaned and reprinted if desired. There is no sign of wiring so I assume this was meant to be lit by oil. I have never seen a similar lamp and can find no maker's mark. Anchor Ships Lantern(Not a Reproduction) This is a very large antique ships lantern marked as"Anchor" To the best of my knowledge it has all parts needed to burn oil. Please view pictures to augment my description. It is not electrified and it is NOT a reproduction. Lamp measures a stately 23" to top of handle. 18" tall without handle and at its widest a 10" diameter. With the exception of a dent in the brass at the base the lantern is in excellent condition. Lantern inner chimney has a couple of chips and a crack at the bottom where it sits in base. This can be easily replace but I beleive that this one is original so I will not replace. Measuring 22" tall(not including handle) width of about 11" The piece is painted but as far as I can tell the most or possibly the entirety of the piece is made of copper. The lantern is a forward facing type with mounting rings on each side, an access door on the back an a top hatch that looks down into from the chimney above. Inside the back hatch, the burner assembly is on a track and is removable. It appears to be an oil/kerosene burner with a large reflector. The glass globe appears to be intact. There are three attached metal labels or tags on the front. I will try to decipher them for you, due to age and paint there are partially legible. Lantern measures 20" tall with handle extended up. The wick key is attached to side and wick turn knob works good. No broken glass on paynes and side door works good. The door opens and closes shut properly. Looks to have never been lit. There is one small dent in the side of the top. otherwise no damage. Measures about 6 1/2" X 7" X 16" tall including the hanlde. The glass in the middle is in good shape with no chips or cracks and has a red lens inside signifying that it would have hung on the port side. This BEAUTIFUL. Antique, ALL- BRASS SHIP'S LANTERN was designed and built by Sherwood. Ltd. of Birmingham, England. Though it is very old, it is ALL here. All parts are in working order. There are NO dents anywhere, all the glass is in perfect condition, all hinges and snap closures are in good working order. The only very slight condition issue that I can find is that the wick mechanism is tight and hard to turn, but it does turn. All the solders are in perfect condition- no broken solders. This is just a GREAT example of a top-quality antique ship's light. The mounting bracket on the back is heavy and perfect. There is a little loss of black paint on the wooden handle which could easily be touched up. If you wish. The wooden handle is in great shape with no cracks. All of the rivets are copper. This lantern has been used, but over-all ... moreit is in nearly new condition. Please zoom all the photos to see all the parts and their condition. There is a little mild water spotting on the back, but it is very slight, otherwise the finish is just about PERFECT! This is a wonderful, classic and authentic marine lantern in wonderful condition. Made of brass and iron. A gimbal allows something that contains liquid to self level in a situation such as a ship where the floor would not remain horizontal, something you would appreciate especially with a lamp holding flammable fuel. There is an old wick coming out of the burner side, and a thumbscrew that will open the filling space. The gimbal is made of iron, a gracefully curved heavy bar that would have been placed into a hole in a post drilled to hold a lamp such as this. The lamp itself is made of brass, made to withstand heavy duty use. When you remove the thumbscrew, the plate on the top will lift off with the wick. We could not find another example like this one so we are calling it rare. What a great chance to obtain something that would have been vitally useful in its time, but is a relic now that predates the electric light bulb. Embossed on back Patented April 1st. 1913. Brass Plate on front reads.Trade Mark Triplex Pat. 1910. Red and Blue glass lens. Blue lens is marked Triplex. Lens are Excellent with no cracks or chips. There is some wear overall and some mild hairlines ... morein the reservoir. Looks like the bottom of the lamp may have been repaired at one point. Not sure. No apparent makers mark.
