Antique Ship Lantern R. C. Murray & Co., Ltd., 17 Cavendish St., Glasgow
This antique ship lantern was given to Hospitality Homes. A Boston MA based charity that provides housing in host homes for families of patients who come to Boston for medical care. It was purchased by the donor about 50 years ago from an antique dealer in Needham, MA. I don't know much about it and really can't make any promises. It looks to have been recently polished and is in very good condition. There is a removable lantern with a wick and glass that sits inside the lantern. The base is about 7 inches square and the lantern is about 15.25 inches to all without the handle up and about 18" tall with the handle up. Antique SHIP’s Globe Hurricane Lantern- Phosphor Bronze Early 1900's
Genuine. Early 1900’s ship’s lamp known variously as a“hurricane globe lantern, watermelon lamp, or onion lamp. It features a heavy glass globe indicative of its early manufacture. This lantern is complete with its original oil font and burner which fits into the bottom of the lamp with a positive half twist. The top of the lamp is fitted with a heat disbursing castellated chimney cap and the lamp is equipped with a stout wire bail handle for hanging. This diminutive little veteran of the sea measures 11 ½ inches tall and 10 inches in wide. Inclusive of the handle it measures approximately 13 ¼ inches tall. It is in good condition given its age and apparent actual use at sea. There is a small sent in the chimney cap and a stress crack in the globe which cannoy be felt when rubbing you fingers across it. Here we have a very large ship or boat lamp or lantern marked"Anchor" This estate found lantern is made from solid brass which has been lacquered. Although the lacquer is crazing from age. It still displays very nicely. The center cap in the top flips up and it also opens at the base of the top as well. There is an oil lamp inside that does have the wick. In the center there is a very thick ribbed glass lens that has no cracks. There is a brass anchor hook on the top and the bottom. No dents, nice vintage condition. Very large, the lamp itself measures an impressive 18 1/2" tall not including the anchor hooks at the top and bottom. Diameter is about 9 3/4" This sizable lamp displays nicely. Here is an absolutely stunning and very rare example of an early. Solid brass, candle powered ship's navigation lantern. Though one in this price range isn't for everyone, it is for the serious collector. Circa late 1800's to very early 1900's. This style of lantern was also often used as a Lighthouse Keepers Stairwell or Passageway Light. As it was made by the famous lighthouse Fresnel Makers- Barbier Benard& Turenne of Paris, it seems only fitting. The lantern has a plate on the front of it's lighthouse style body, that names this maker. It is made of highly polished solid brass. And is 7.5" wide, 16.5" w/o bales extended and 26" with bales extended. It is a fairly large lantern. It is fitted with the original lens, which in made of red glass shaped to look like a lighthouse and made of high quality ... moreglass. The globe is in excellent condition showing no chips or cracks. As for the inner workings of the lantern. As the candle burns a brass spring slowly pushes it up in order to keep the flame at a constant level. A candle is included. Here is a great and unique piece for your buying consideration. Recently acquired it at an auction where it was commingled with a lot of marine/nautical items from an individual's collection. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself! I have never seen one of these before. The body is made of brass. The tall neck can be screwed off of the body by the fixed bolt head on the end of it. At the end of the neck is a pinhole where the fluid vapors could be let to allow the flame for lighting the lanterns. What looks like a key is where the flammable fluid would have been put in the body. Think that is true with the"pan" around the key to facilitate the pouring. There is a brass side ... morepiece with screws in it that does not go to the inside of the pot. So. Another way to hold it. or locking into a device that it was inserted into. The brass and wood handle has some good age to it. I suspect the brass at end of handle was resoldered back on to the pot at some time in the past. There are two patent dates on the piece. On the filler cap key is a date of April 19 1892. On the pot itself is a date of April 4. 1893. Appears the piece could be used as a lantern or torch. Here is a great nautical ship or railroad lantern for your buying consideration. Recently acquired them at an auction that a party's collection of marine/nautical items were being sold. Per the patent date of March 1 1864. The burner has the name"Convex on the other side of the brass wick guide. Struck out when attempted to find something online for that patent date. Ring for hanging it is still on the top of the lantern. The lantern also has a brass spring clip affixed to the back of ... morethe lamp. Someone put felt on it. So as to not scratch the surface the lantern is attached to. The lantern has a thick rounded glass on it. The glass is not cracked. There is a chip in the glass where the clear globe meets the metal body on the top left side. The burner appears intact and has a wick in it. A ding in the bottom of the burner. The case of the lantern is made of metal. Probably repainted with the black paint on it some time after it was new many moons ago. No major rust or corrosion to the lantern body. The lantern is 8.75" tall. By 3.75" across, by 5.25" wide. I do not see a maker's mark on the body of the lantern or lens, just the burner body. Looks to be c.Late-19thC vintage to me. Lantern is 20" tall not including the top swing handle. Buying as you see it as found in estate. The globe has a large hole on one side with crack lines going out from hole. The remaining thick glass looks stable as is however. Globe still displays well on good side. There are other ridge chips on glass. A couple of dings spots on shoulder of lamp. Top lid has dent on top. Vertical cage rod is pushed in where the hole in glass is. And 11.5" tall excuding the wire handle. Cage and lantern are very straight with only a small amount of oxidation, and everthing appears to be in good useable shape. There is a chip on the bottom edge of the globe with pieces on each side of it glued back onto it. Even so A classic that's sure to be a great addition to any collection. It is a heavyweight.Well detailed, and realistic replica of an antique anchor light typical of those used on 19th century wooden sailing ships. It measures 14 inches high by 7 inches in diameter. Lamp appears to have professionally wired, and is equipped with a porcelain bulb socket for illumination as a table/wall light. Piece is in the nice original condition in which it was found in the attic of a local estate showing a nice original patina, and would prove to compliment any nautical/coastal cottage décor. Copper or Brass Ship Lantern. Wired for an electric bulb and with a wall mount bracket. The overall height from the base to the top acorn nut is about 14.5 inches. The depth from front to back is about 9.5 inches and the diameter is 7 inches. The metal surface has patina from age. The fresnel glass globe is intact and has a nice lavender hue.
