Maritime Navigational Lanterns.The main housing is constructed of galvanized iron and ... morethe top cover is copper. However they have not been shined up. The original manufacturer was Wilcox& Crittenden& Co. There trademark was Capital W with a Capital C embossed on top of one another. The factory was in Middletown, CONN. USA. There is a photo of the Logo which appears to be embossed on brass, it is on the side, located on top of a metal sleeve, which is riveted on the lantern itself. This sleeve must have been used to slip over something to hold it secure to the ship. Both sleeves are intact and extremely secure. This embossing is very difficult to capture in a photo as the glare, and clarity of a photo so close. The lanterns stand just shy of 13" tall with the hanging loop standing up. They are made to fit in a corner. The sides measure 5" With the front curving around to meet the 2 sides. The glass itself is 5" tall and is almost 90 degrees. One lantern has fresnel green glass for the starboard, and the lantern with the fresnel red glass is for the port. The glass on both lanterns is in very good shape and have no cracks or chips. The metal round accesses to the oil chambers/wicks are both present and appear tight when screwed in. The wick chambers need cleaning, but seem to work, and even have wick left in them! We didn't attempt to light them, but knowing something about oil lanterns, don't see any reason they wouldn't work, however this isn't a guarantee. just presenting things honestly. The metal. Nowhere, on either lantern shows any sign of rust. However they are a brown color. Paint appears to be old, in some places chipping, or peeling off. There are the usual signs of true usage. Wear and tear. Overall appear to be in very good shape. I have not checked them for leakage, however on inspection, I don't see any reason they would leak. I have no idea how old they are. My friend is finally clearing out her sheds in an effort to downsize. Her in-laws. Now passed, were prominent figures in the folk-art world, and her family has traveled extensively, so she has many years and two households of fine objets d’art to go through. I selected some of the better pieces to offer the eBay community. Her home and mine are smoke-free, and mine is pet-free too. This is a big nautical oil lantern. Made of copper to resist salt water corrosion. ... moreAll original parts. It was in the cellar of a home that flooded during Hurricane Irene here in Vermont, and is full of silt. I rinsed off the outside just enough to show what it is, but am not qualified to clean it thoroughly. The door slides down within guides. And you can see the loop and tab that secure it. It has a large reservoir, glass chimney, and the domed top opens smoothly. The label is soldered on, and has worn enough that I cannot quite make out the image– two horses, a standing figure with reins, maybe flanked by two seated figures, on a carriage indicated by a curving line– no wheels. When this is shined up it will be spectacular. The“buy it now” is low because it needs cleaning. But this is a showpiece.

Lamp measures a stately 23" to top of handle. 18" tall without handle and at its widest a 10" diameter. With the exception of a dent in the brass at the base the lantern is in excellent condition. Lantern inner chimney has a couple of chips and a crack at the bottom where it sits in base. This can be easily replace but I beleive that this one is original so I will not replace. Measuring 22" tall(not including handle) width of about 11" The piece is painted but as far as I can tell the most or possibly the entirety of the piece is made of copper. The lantern is a forward facing type with mounting rings on each side, an access door on the back an a top hatch that looks down into from the chimney above. Inside the back hatch, the burner assembly is on a track and is removable. It appears to be an oil/kerosene burner with a large reflector. The glass globe appears to be intact. There are three attached metal labels or tags on the front. I will try to decipher them for you, due to age and paint there are partially legible. The base is 6 inches across and the light is very heavy duty. Not sure if it is military as it appears to be somewhat grey in coloring. There is a number 9-S 4473-L in raised lettering on top. This brass hanging bulkhead ship's lantern is a rare example of the workmanship and quality of Wm. Harvie& Co. Ltd. Birmingham, England, one of the largest and finest nautical lighting manufacturers at the turn of the 20th century. Dating to around 1900, the lantern has a detachable kerosene burner and hand-blown font. Except for the wick, everything on the lantern is original. Measuring 17 inches tall. Excluding the ring handle. The lantern is marked with a plaque on the domed top. It reads, Wm. Harvie& Co. Ltd. 121 Bishop Street, Birmingham. It is substantial. Weighing over 5 pounds. The lantern is 6& 1/2 inches wide and 4& 1/2 inches deep. The detachable kerosene burner is accessed by a side door. Which has a sliding lock and a ring handle. They are quite useful for reassuring yourself that there are, in fact, no murderous clowns hidden in your guest room, but when it comes to design, your standard, run of the mill lamp can be a bit yawn-inducing. Luckily, there are enterprising people out there that like to make lamps out of awesome things, hence how this Ship's Lamp was born. It is marked"No. L688" and"Not Under Command" The lantern is mostly made of brass and copper. The glass in the middle is in good shape with no chips or cracks and has a red lens inside signifying that it would have hung on the port side. Overall it is in good shape except for a dent in the copper lid that looks like it could be easily popped out. Comes complete with the removable oil reservoir and and burner. Here is an antique ship's lantern made by Universal Metal Spinning and Stamping Co. New York. The manufacturer is stamped into the side of the lantern. Also. Markings on the top say"Starboard Classes II& III" The triangular shaped lantern has a hinged door, vented top, and a handle for carrying. I believe this is a brass lantern, but I am not certain. The metal is non magnetic. The lens is thick and'ridged' and is blue in color. There is no burner in the lantern. The lantern and lens are dirty, but I do not see any cracks in the lens, or any dents/dings in the lantern. Lantern measures about 10" tall(not including the handle) and is about 7 1/4" wide from corner to corner. In searching the internet, I have seen a very similar lantern set(both port and starboard) by the same manufacturer, sell on liveauctioneers.com, ... morefor $350. They are advertised as 19th century lanterns, but I have not found too much information regarding this company, or when they were in business. I can send any additional photos that you request. Antique SHIP'S OIL LANTERN by Sherwood LTD, Birmingham - ALL ORIGINAL, WORKING
This BEAUTIFUL. Antique, ALL- BRASS SHIP'S LANTERN was designed and built by Sherwood. Ltd. of Birmingham, England. Though it is very old, it is ALL here. All parts are in working order. There are NO dents anywhere, all the glass is in perfect condition, all hinges and snap closures are in good working order. The only very slight condition issue that I can find is that the wick mechanism is tight and hard to turn, but it does turn. All the solders are in perfect condition- no broken solders. This is just a GREAT example of a top-quality antique ship's light. The mounting bracket on the back is heavy and perfect. There is a little loss of black paint on the wooden handle which could easily be touched up. If you wish. The wooden handle is in great shape with no cracks. All of the rivets are copper. This lantern has been used, but over-all ... moreit is in nearly new condition. Please zoom all the photos to see all the parts and their condition. There is a little mild water spotting on the back, but it is very slight, otherwise the finish is just about PERFECT! This is a wonderful, classic and authentic marine lantern in wonderful condition. Stands 16" tall not counting the handle, is 8" wide and 6" deep. This top-quality brass lamp weighs a little over 10.5 pounds. Will insure.
