Piling, master head, anchor, or dock lantern/ ... morelight. I am not sure of the proper name or use for this lantern. Can you inform me? It measures 17 ½” tall. The bottom is 8” in diameter, the top is 7 ½” in diameter, the lens is 4 ¾” tall(the exposed portion) and the lens is approx 5” in diameter. The lens is a dark ruby red and I see no cracks or chips. The body is galvanized metal with the rings. Latching hardware and the top ring of bottom portion being made of brass. There is a makers mark on the inside but some is missing and I cannot tell by what I can read who the maker is. Do you know? I assume that it was battery operated but there is no battery or wiring that is visible. I did not take the top portion apart and do not know if there is a bulb inside. The one photo that shows the lens bright was held up to the sun. The lantern is in good overall condition with some oxidation and rust as shown. The rubber gasket and other rubber pieces are inside but in poor condition(see photos) Please look at the photos carefully to see what is included. The lantern/ lamp is untested. The bottom is weighted, which I was thinking might indicate that it was to be used on a boat or ship. The only marking is on the knob and it has an R and V on each side of a anchor. Market fresh find; Original to the mid-1800's from the French Crimean war era. This is an Ouvrard& Villars Nautical Anchor lamp; Beautiful condition, it is constructed of hammered copper with a dual-ring brass cage. Original ruby flashed red globe. Marked O V Depose on the copper. May very well have come from one of the Ironclad Steam Battleships on the Black Sea, I purchased this lantern from the estate of a very meticulous and discriminating lamp collector. This piece has undergone a no-harm electrification. Which can easily be removed. The original oil burner is wired to the underside of the chimney. The original font is in place. The bottom of the font has been painted on the underside. I can't guarantee the font won't leak, but I suspect(but can't confirm) it was painted to stop any rust. You are looking at an Antique Copper Anchor Lantern/ Lamp. This lantern is 19 inches tall and comes with an electric light kit as well as oil burner. The Fresnel style lens is made to magnify the oil lamp light to be visible for 20 nautical miles. Lamp is hand machined in pure heavy-gauge copper with brass trim.
