Beautiful Antique German Viola, c. 1900, Very Good Condition - 15 1/4 inch back
This beautifu l antique German viol a is offered to the highest bidder with no reserve. The back of the viola measures 385mm or 15 3/8 inches. The viola is unlabeled and I do not know who made it. It does bear the repair label of Richard Lubocki of Dortmund. Germany dated 1922. The viola is in very good condition with three small well- repaired hairline cracks on the top. Near the saddle and tail piece. Other than these repaired cracks. There is no other damage or repairs to be found. There are no cracks or repairs in the sound post or bass bar areas. The set up is completely fresh. Including a new custom bridge, vintage tail piece( high gr ade ebony) Tail gut, sound post, and strings. The work was done by an experienced and professional luthier. Who checked it out thoroughly. He also plan ed the fingerboard. Adjusted the pegs to hold well ... moreand turn eas ily. And installed new Thomastik Dominant strings. The viola is ready-to-play. This is a very attractive instrument with a ri ch. Fi ery oil varnish and beautiful woods. The back. Ribs and neck are all from the same Maple tree, h ighly f lamed with intense figure. The top is tight and straight grained old growth spruce. Resplendent with shimmering silks and bear claw figure. The purfling is expertly inlaid very close to the edges. And the corners, edgework, ffs and button all reflect the attributes common ly considered by experts in the field to be good. The interior work is very neat and clean. There are four. Large contoured corner bl ocks and wide linings all around that are let into the blocks. The work reflects meticulous attention to detail. T he external appearance is that o f a much newer. Fresher instrument than its age would suggest, but close examination reveals a light and clean patina. There are some nicks and light scratches to be sure, but the corners are all original and intact. The pegbox pristine, and the varnish retains its original gloss.
