Northwood Carnival Glass Rose Bowl ~ Beaded Cable ~ Blue Glass
For bid is this highly desirable piece of Northwood Carnival Glass. It's the Bead and Cable design in BLUE glass! This rose bowl has very beautiful iridescent color! The beads and cables are very detailed and pronounced. So I think this would be an early piece. As molds were used over and over, they would wear, and the finished products would lose their detail. If you view many other examples of the Bead and Cable Rose Bowl on the internet, you'll find the tiniest, outermost beads are smoothed out or even nonexistent. This rose bowl measures about 3-3/4" high. 4-1/2" wide. It has three feet. The inside bottom of the bowl has the Northwood mark of an underlined"N" inside a circle. I used a magnifying glass to examine the beads. There are about 15 or so of the tiniest beads that are missing tips, but adjacent larger ... morebeads are not. Since the larger ones stick out further than the small ones, I'm not so sure the defects on the small beads are damage. They might have been done in the making of the piece. I do see three of the larger beads with tips missing. Since the beads are so small, you hardly notice any issues. Please look at my enlarged photos to see for yourself. The mold marks on the outside of the bowl and on the feet are pronounced and a little rough. There might be a couple of places on the mold mark of the feet that have chipped away, but again, this could have been done in the making. You will notice a couple of lines or creases in the glass. These are cooling marks, not cracks. The lines are filled with iridescent finish, so they were done prior to coloring. There are a few spots of missing iridescence. I hope this detailed description does not diminish the beauty of this piece. Again, please view the enlarged photos, and see for yourself! I am offering the bowl with a very fair Buy It Now price. Pale pink glass beads, with other smaller orange beads, forming a fringe around a shaped wire frame. The frame itself is covered in old metallic lame braid. I'd estimate that it dates c1920s so, unsurprisingly, the thread holding the beads on has broken in places& it now requires some restoration, involving re-threading the beads& sewing them onto the braid(there is a little bag of loose beads with the shade too. The frame part measures 25cm or approx 10" across& it comes with a chain& ceiling rose but would obviously need new electrical wire. NO RESERVE… This auction is for a vintage Hand Strung Glass Beaded Kamba Belt or Sash. It is likely something a tourist collector purchased traveling in Africa. I really know nothing about the Kamba. Or the country of Kenya, but I would imagine there is info somewhere on google. I do not know the age of the piece, and the box shown, that it was in, in not related to the piece. The piece measures approx. 31 inches long, and about 1 7/8 inch wide. There is also bead work trim hanging down, with every other beaded trim piece having metal trim on the end. In one of my photos I have used 2 yellow pencils pointing to a couple of strings of white beads. These 2 bottom strings are broken free, and need to be mended. This"HUGE" signed Stanly Hagler piece measures a full 4 Inches across. a full 3 inches high.This piece is in pristine condition.Absolutely no issues.It has been resting on velvet in it's own box for years.I know this because it's from my own collection. Hagler broke into the costume jewelry scene in the 1950′s riding in on a very strong market pioneered by the likes of Miriam Haskell. Elsa Schiaparelli and Hattie Carnegie. It is said that he got his start while working in management for one of the large costume jewelry houses. Evidently, a friend dared him to design a piece of jewelry. He took on the dare, saying he would design something befitting a Queen and he did. Unfortunately, the Queen did not purchase it, but the Duchess of Windsor did. His design career started out with a bang and never stopped.
