1640) Countermarked Billon Douzain[Revalued to Fifteen Deniers] Breen 271. Vlack 1-m, Gadoury 21, Host Coin is a PAPAL DOUZAIN STRUCK IN AVIGNON, a rarer host coin, listed by Vlack as Rarity-6. Fine or so for both the undertype and the countermark. The host coin is weak at the peripheries. As often seen on these issues, a trace of the obverse legend and well over half the reverse legend still there. The distinctly different design details are sharp and make attribution certain. Including the large cross used in the reverse shield design. The fleur-de-lis countermark is strong. Nice silvery gray. With a few marks from this issues LONG circulation– the host coin was in circulation for 56 years then countermarked and circulated for probably an equal amount of time. One of the more fascinating of French colonial issues. The first large-scale ... moreattempt to provide specie to the North American colonies, making it a no-questions-asked French colonial piece, and one that also saw use in the British North American colonies– especially as these colonies passed from empire to empire after every major war. Difficult to locate in better grade. These“Black Dogges” as the British called them) were in circulation decades before most of the Massachusetts silver coinages, making them one of the earliest coins struck for North America. Papal Spoon Rarest Gorham Pattern Columbus World's Fair Borgia
I have had this spoon for a long time and have spent hours researching it. If you Google search“ papal spoon” in images I am sure you will find some websites where I posted it. There are a fair amount of little nicks in the bowl. Making it look as if it is older than it is, it was probably kept in a spooner on the table. I originally thought the Pope was Leo X and it was somewhat odd that it had a naked lady and a pair of nearly naked angels on it. Finally after a lot of wild suggestions a friendly client supplied me with a picture of a fruit spoon with the same handle marked with the Gorham mark and a date mark of 1893. Still I couldn’ t figure out why anyone would put out a souvenir spoon of a long dead pope. Finally another client supplied the answer. Gorham put out a set of silver for the Chicago World’ s Fair Columbian Exposition. The ... morehandles were all similar and had events from the life of Columbus depicted. This one is evidently his death. The Pope then was Alexander VI one of the Borgia popes. Perhaps one of the most notorious in history. Which certainly makes a naked lady more appropriate. I have heard of less than a handful of these pieces being found. I am not sure why it is not marked, as with the exception of the rare“ C” mark most Gorham pieces were marked. They always seemed to find room somewhere. The only explanation I can come up with is that it was never sold. But was perhaps a gift from the company to someone associated with its design or production. As to the rarity. My best guess is that some people might have taken offense at the rather politically incorrect idea of mixing naked ladies and popes, even ones of rather dubious reputations. There are still some questions to be had concerning the iconography on the spoon. I guess one can forgive having Columbus die sitting up in a room that looks like part of the Vatican, but why are the angels holding a crown over a pope who is already wearing a Papal Tiara or Crown? 6 ¼” long. Two(2) rare copper Vatican Papal States coins from the Napoleonic era& Barbary War during Thomas Jefferson’s presidency. Pius VII was pope during the reign of Napoleon and during the US war with the Barbary pirates. These two coins are dated 1802 and 1815. Legend reads: Pius Septimus Pontifex Maximus” Pope Pius VII) One has the Roman numeral date“MDCCCXV” for 1815. The other has the date“MDCCCII” for 1802. These Vatican coins are very scarce.
